“Very romantic. You should try it, now that you can have fur and paws instead of pansy little talons.”

Remy’s owl said, I want to leave a dead mouse on her pillow.

Shut the fuck up. We like her, remember?

Speak for yourself.

Remy knew the owl didn’t mean it. Something inside both of them started to settle down. Owls were often solitary, but Remy didn’t do well alone. Probably because of the twin thing.

Or the fucking leopard. It was practically jumping up and down inside him. Crew! People! Leopard-brother! Can we go running? Let’s Change. Let’s go hunting. Can we kill something? Something big we can share with everyone? I love people.

His owl said, We need an aspirin. And the furball needs a tranquilizer.

Remy tuned out both of them and went to talk to Colt. “How was flying back?” he asked, curious. “I’m surprised your cat put up with being locked in a tin box for hours.”

Colt grimaced. “Me too. Callie was ready with the tranquilizers.” He shrugged on a flannel shirt. “And there was a certain amount of tequila involved. As well as other distractions.”

Callie said, “I’m a member of the mile-high club now.” Kitty and Callie high-fived.

Colt grinned. “That might have been worth leaving the truck behind for. Still have to figure out how to get that back here, though.”

Only Squatch was hanging back. He was watching Remy, doing that ‘look-into-your-soul’ thing that was so fucking annoying.

He could swear Squatch knew that Remy had been in the spirit world again. It was like he could smell it on him.

Brandon said, “Sorry to break up the reunion, but we need to do a briefing and strategy session on the Sutcliffe case. And this whole Jaeda Monroe thing.”

Remy nodded. “More coffee,” Colt said, heading inside. “Lots and lots of coffee.”

Remy gave Brandon and Colt a complete briefing and they mapped out their evidence-gathering strategy, factoring Jaeda in.

Brandon wanted Remy to work with Jaeda on trying to find an electronic paper trail for the corruption, including Sutcliffe’s money. “She can probably get access to his computer, and she can get us into the company network as well. You can do that while Colt’s working the other end from the construction site.”

Remy nodded. “I can do that.”

So we will see her again, his leopard said. I will let her pet me.

Attention slut, his owl muttered.

Remy tried to ignore the fizzy feeling inside him at the idea of spending more time with Jaeda. It had to be the leopard talking.

Brandon gave Remy the steely eye. “And don’t let anything happen to her, unless you want Jace Monroe, Rafe Connors and Kane Colton on our doorstep looking for blood.”

“I’m more afraid of Emma, Terin and Rachelle,” Colt said, naming their mates. “Terin wields a mean grenade launcher.”

“Just don’t make any of them want to kill us, okay?” Brandon said.

“I’ll do my best,” Remy said. “But Jaeda takes after her mother way too much. I get the feeling she’ll do fucking anything if she gets pissed off enough. And you have no idea what a dick Sutcliffe can be. If she snaps, I’m not responsible for what happens afterwards.”

Brandon sighed. “Great. We’re fucking doomed.”

Chapter 15

When the briefing was over and they were in the kitchen foraging for food, Remy said to Colt, “I really need some exercise. Want to go up to the target and throw some axes?”

Colt eyed him for a second, and then said, “Sure. Let me put my work boots on.”

Kitty said, “I’m down for throwing axes. I—”
