He kissed her again. “I stand corrected.” He looked at Jaeda. “I know you need to do things your own way, but I wish you weren’t going so far out of the shifter world.”
“I know.” It was an old discussion. The Silverlake pack still had enemies, and it pained her dad like a hot poker up his butt to have her out here unprotected. Of course, he’d still have her on a curfew if he could, too.
She said, “We went through all this when I went to college. It’s why you got Uncle Jesse to put together a fake name and background, so no shifters could find me. And no one knows where I am. Not even Michelangela or Ravenna.”
Michelangela Connors and Ravenna Colton were her two best friends from the pack. She was in touch with them both, but they didn’t know exactly where she was right now. She missed them, but it was better this way.
Jace said, “Well, if you won’t come back to Idaho and you won’t accept bodyguards, I have to make sure you have everything you need. I made a list.”
Jaeda didn’t even bother to hide her grin as he fished the paper out of his pocket and unfolded it. Everyone knew where she’d gotten her mad list-making skillz.
She got out her notepad and pen. Just because her dad was an overprotective worrywart didn’t mean he didn’t have good ideas.
“Ready,” she said.
“Okay. Emergency car kit,” he began.
“Check.”
“Good spare.”
“Check.”
“Wrist knives and boot knives.”
Emma added, “Garter sheath knife. For under skirts. Men never think of those.”
“I know, right?” Jaeda said. “Check, check, and check.”
They went down the list—Mace, Taser, registered weapons, unregistered weapons, concealed whiskey flask. That was another Emma suggestion.
“I used to work in corporate offices, hon. Trust me, you’ll need it.”
“Michelangela gave me one last Christmas.”
“I always liked that girl.”
Her dad shook his head. “Where was I? Oh. Condoms.”
Jaeda rolled her eyes. “Check.”
“Chastity belt.”
“Dad!”
She heard the refrigerator door open and close, and then her Uncle Rafe’s voice from off-camera. He was her dad’s Second in the pack, and also Michelangela’s father. “Condoms or chastity belt, dude. Nobody needs both.”
Jace glared over his shoulder at Rafe. “It’s called redundancy, Connors. Also known as Plan B. I have no idea why we ever let you plan Enforcer missions without supervision.”
“Because I rock?”
“No. You’re a waste of beer.”
Jace turned back to the camera. “I’m going to leave you to have girl talk with your mom. Call if you need us. Anytime. If we can’t get there, our allies can.”
That was her dad. Always on the alert for an attack. “I know, Dad,” she said. “Love you to pieces.”
“I love you too, Wolflet.” He always called her that, even though she wasn’t a wolf. To let her know he thought of her as one.
