He looked away finally and said, “I don’t know how I feel about it. Except for two things.” He looked back at her, and his eyes had gone amber, like his owl’s. “One, if you treat my brother right, you will never have any problems with me. And B) you better not fucking break his heart.”

He turned and walked off into the woods.

You better not fucking break his heart. It took a second for that to sink in.

Remy thought Colt’s heart was involved with her. That he cared so much about Callie, she had the power to break it.

Did he have the power to break hers too? She was afraid maybe he did.

Hell. And Bad Girl Callie had been doing so well.

Chapter 19

Brandon was kicked back on the redneck porch sofa at the mansion, checking the Kentucky state requirements for private investigator licenses on his computer, when he got a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach.

The same feeling he always used to get when Kitty was in trouble, except Kitty was lying in a hammock under one of the trees, reading on her Kindle.

Phantom Nick, who had been lounging at the foot of the porch steps, raised his translucent head, ears pricked. He slowly turned his head and stared at Brandon.

Damn, the ghost felt it too.

He ran through his crew in his mind. Colt was at the lighting supplier, an hour away. This didn’t feel like him. Jason was up at the target range, throwing axes. Brandon could hear them thunking rhythmically into the wooden targets.

Squatch was… wherever Squatch went. Carving stone statues up at his cabin, or roaming the woods scaring the animals. But he wasn’t worried about Squatch.

Remy… Where the fuck was Remy?

At that moment, he heard a cell phone ring in the kitchen. The private ringtone Colt and Remy only used on each other’s phones.

He went in through the window over the couch, busting the screen out of its frame. Remy’s phone was lying on the counter.

He picked up the phone and hit the button. “Hey, Colt. This is Brandon.”

“Fuck. Where’s Remy?”

Excellent damn question. “Flying, maybe? He left his phone here.”

“Yeah. He went on an owl mission, to drop something off at Callie’s for me. He should be back by now. Something’s wrong. I can feel it.”

Dammit. The twins’ bond was as close as his and Kitty’s. They always knew when the other one was in trouble. And apparently, Brandon, as alpha, was tapped into it now too.

“I know,” he said to Colt. “I just felt it. I’ll go look for him.”

“Thanks, man. Let me know when you find him.”

“Will do.” Brandon paused. “Anything I should know?”

There was a long silence. Colt sighed. “The leopard might be giving him a hard time.”

“How hard?”

There was another pause. “Maybe getting stuck between owl and leopard hard?”

Fuck. “Get back here. Forget the supplies.”

“I’m already in my truck.” Colt hung up.

Brandon debated taking one of the others with him, but in the end he decided it would be better to go alone—and pray Remy wasn’t in a really bad state.
