He led her into the living room and sat her down on the couch. “We did this once before,” he said, “but it totally sucked and it wasn’t romantic and so I have to do it again.”
“We’ve done many things on the couch that involve sucking,” she said, “but they were all amazing. And romantic. None of them actually sucked.”
He grinned at her, then took her hand. Then he reached up with his other hand and brushed a tendril of hair out of her face the way he loved to do. He trailed his fingers down her cheek and across her lips, his eyes growing serious.
“When we first met,” he said, “I was a total fucking wreck. I felt like I’d lost everything. I had no idea I was just about to find the best things in my life.”
He raised her hand to his and kissed her knuckles, one by one. Mina’s heart immediately went all mushy. “I hope you brought the tissues,” she said. “Because I’m pretty sure I’m going to need them.”
He kissed her hand again. “Got you covered,” he said. “Now let me finish my speech. I worked hard on it and it’s awesome.”
Mina giggled, but sobered when she saw Noah’s face go serious again.
“From the first moment I met you, you made me want to get over my whining and be a better person. You brought me back to life, and you taught my wannabe badass self what love and loyalty and sacrifice really mean.”
Mina teared up, and he brushed the tears from the corners her eyes. “I still think you’re badass,” she said softly.
“Nah, I’m terrified,” Noah said. He slid off the couch and went down on one knee, fishing a tiny velvet box out of his pocket.
Mina drew in her breath, her heart going all mushy again.
“Mina Reston,” he said, “I, Noah Angus McHottie Gray Wolf Reilly, am asking you to be my forever mate, my partner in bull riding and onion eating, my best friend, and the mother of my wolf babies. Will you marry me?”
Mina flung her arms around his neck before he could even get the ring box open, hugging him tight. “Hell yes, Mr. Noah Gray Woof etcetera etcetera.”
The ring was gorgeous. Rose gold and diamonds, and she couldn’t stop looking at it. She hugged him tight again, and then put her hands on either side of his face.
She could still see the uncertainty in his eyes, the worry that he wouldn’t be good enough, strong enough, perfect enough.
“Your dark places don’t scare me,” she said, gazing deeply into his eyes. “You’re a good man, Noah Reilly. You are the best mate I could ever ask for, and the best father to my son. We may be broken, you and I, but we fit. Together, we’re perfect.”
She saw his eyes go misty, and she tilted his head so their foreheads touched. “I love you.”
“I love you back,” he whispered. He closed his eyes for a moment, and she saw him trying to get control over his emotions. Then he kissed her and said, “Okay, next thing.”
He led her to one of the living room windows and opened it. Then he handed her a flare gun.
“Here,” he said. “Shoot this out the window.”
She started laughing. “What?”
“Shoot it.”
She aimed the gun out the window and shot the flare into the air. Green sparks rained down, lighting up half the hillside.
She looked at him. “And?”
He grinned. “Wait for it.”
In about thirty seconds, there was the sound of pounding feet, and then the door burst open and Brock tumbled through. “She said yes! She said yes!”
“She did, buddy,” Noah said, picking him up and throwing him in the air. “We’re gonna get married and be a family.”
Brock clapped his hands. “I knew it because Mr. Noah said he’d shoot green sparks if you said yes. Mr. Noah asked me before if it was okay if he married you, because I was the man of the family, and I said yes and we got you lots and lots of roses!”
“Yes you did, baby, and I love them.” Mina hugged them both, her heart bursting.
Rafe and Terin showed up in the doorway next. “She said yes!” Brock crowed.
