Chapter 33
Mina fought with all her strength, biting, scratching and kicking, but the man had shifter strength. She tasted the blood from where she’d bitten his fingers, but he just laughed, the craziness in the sound jangling in her ears.
When they got out of range of the light from the clearing, he stopped. “You’re an abomination,” he hissed into her ear. “Tainting shifter bloodlines with your filthy human genes. And that immature boy wolf deserves to suffer and die for his weakness. You both make me sick.”
His hand came away from Mina’s mouth, and she felt two hard blows in her side, as if she’d been punched. Then Brock was ripped out of her arms.
She wanted to scream, but her voice wouldn’t work and her legs wouldn’t work. Her knees buckled. She saw Creston disappearing into the forest, carrying her little boy. And then she felt warm wetness on her side, and sharp knifing pain, and she crumpled to the ground.
She didn’t know how long she lay there, going in and out of consciousness, trying to crawl after Creston and Brock and failing. And then Noah was there, kneeling over her, his face full of fear and disbelief.
“Oh, Mina, no,” he was saying. His hand probed her side, coming away red with blood. It didn’t hurt so much anymore, but she was cold, so cold, and she didn’t want Noah to be sad over her. He had to find Brock.
“Brock,” she whispered.
Noah leaned over her, pressing a wad of cloth into her side. “Don’t talk,” he said. “We’ll get you fixed up, oh, fuck, Mina…”
She tried to shake her head. “Creston…has…Brock. Find him. Have to…find…him.”
Noah’s hands stilled, staring at her. “Mina, I can’t leave you. You’ll die.”
She stared hard into his eyes. She didn’t want to die. She didn’t want to leave him, but it didn’t matter. “Find…Brock. Do it…for me. Please.”
“Mina…” Noah looked like he was being ripped in two. He gazed off into the forest, then back at her, gripping her hand hard. “I can’t be without you.”
“Yes. Find Brock…protect…love him…”
He took a deep breath. “I love you, Mina. You really are my mate.”
She tried to nod. “Love…you.” Then she said, “Claim…me.”
“What?”
“Before you go. Claim…me. Yours…always.”
He closed his eyes, agony etched in his face. Then he leaned over and kissed her gently. He moved his teeth to the place where her neck met her shoulder, and bit. Hard.
Pain swept through her, igniting every nerve ending, but she had no strength left to scream. It was like being burned from the inside out.
She felt his wolf—she could almost see it in front of her. True mate, it said. Spirit mate. Till death and beyond.
She felt Noah kiss her one more time, and then he was gone.
Dying wasn’t as hard as she thought it would be. The pain receded, leaving her with that warm sunshiny feeling she always had when Noah was there. Maybe death was that, all the time. That would be nice…
But there was Brock. Brock needed her. And Noah needed her.
The dark fury was nothing but a tiny rumble at first, a vibration down deep in her soul. But it got louder and louder, more and more powerful, until it was a full-blown she-demon bearing down on her like a freight train.
Brock needs me. Noah needs me.
Fire streamed through her veins again, this time black and powerful, until it exploded through her skin into the night.
Noah Gray Wolf bounded through the dark forest like an avenging angel, agony searing his soul. He carried a part of Mina with him now, and he was going to save her son and kill Creston. Anything that got in his way would die too.
It took Noah almost fifteen minutes to run them down. Creston was traveling with a group, running like rats and leaving the rest of their allies without caring if they lived or died.
Creston—wolf. Another wolf. A black bear shifter. And three humans.
