Fuck it all. Now he was falling in fake love with human women, too?
Pathetic.
The woman appeared in the doorway, wearing teal blue scrubs and a shapeless white lab coat. Her dark flyaway hair was pinned back in a bun that was not cooperating; tendrils were straggling down everywhere. That and the natural pouty curve to her lips made her look sexy as hell. He liked the warmth of her eyes, a pretty shade of green like summer leaves.
She stopped dead when she saw him standing up, and put a hand to her chest, surprised.
“Heck’s bells,” she said. “You’re awake.” She shook her head. “Not a fan of the cone, I see. Hmm. Well, I’ll leave it off, but if you start chewing on your bandages, I’m going to have to get strict with you.”
Hell, yeah. She could get strict with him anytime. Thigh-high boots, maybe a leather corset, and…whoops. Don’t go there.
She took a step forward, gazing at him with fascination. “You really are beautiful,” she said softly. “So are you a full-blooded wolf, gorgeous, or a hybrid? And do you have any idea what Robbie the pecker is up to back in those woods?”
Her voice was low and husky, and it sent a shiver through him. Noah wanted to turn human right then and there, sliding his hands beneath that lab coat to caress the curves he saw under her scrubs, kissing her and sucking on that pouty lower lip until she moaned.
As it was, he felt his tail moving in the beginning of a wag.
Stop that! he told his wolf. He was completely embarrassing himself.
But that scent, and that husky voice…he could just lose himself in her.
“How are you feeling, gorgeous?” she asked, coming closer to the cage. “You were in pretty rough shape when I got you on my table. I think we took care of it, though. You should be good as new in a few weeks. Maybe not even much of a limp.”
Little did she know he was halfway healed now, and by tomorrow morning he’d probably have nothing but a scar. Another thing she could not be allowed to find out.
He cursed himself out for forgetting just how much trouble he could be in. He’d been lucky so far—insanely lucky. Who got caught in a trap and then had a sexy veterinary surgeon just happen along?
But that brought its own set of dangers. He was already screwed with the Shifter Council over the whole Selina thing, and if they found out he’d been careless enough to get captured and treated by a human vet, he’d be doubly screwed.
They’d send him into exile, far, far away from here. And he had no idea what they’d do to this woman, if she found out anything she shouldn’t.
He definitely had to get out before she got another look at his wound.
She was frowning at him. “Are you putting weight on that foot?” she said. Noah immediately shifted even more of his weight to the other three legs, holding the injured foot barely off the ground. “No, you couldn’t be.” She bit her lip. “I’m hoping you won’t make me put you out again to check on that wound. We’ll put that off a day or so, though, as long as you don’t start bleeding again.”
Noah huffed a sigh of relief.
The woman laughed—a low, throaty, beautiful sound.
“If I didn’t know better, I’d think you could understand every word I say,” she said. “I bet you need some food.”
He let his ears prick up. She looked at him and sighed, shaking her head.
“What am I going to do with you?” The question was obviously rhetorical. “You can’t be wild—you’re obviously used to humans. Although I’m not going to try to get in there and work on you without you being unconscious. I doubt I could get a muzzle on you.”
Oh hell no. Never going to happen.
She was distracted by a door banging open, out of Noah’s sight.
There was a pounding of feet, and then a little boy of about four careened into sight, growling in his tiny, high-pitched voice.
“Mommy, Mommy, I’m a big bad wolf, and I’m going to eat you up!” he sing-songed. He threw himself at the vet and hugged her around the legs.
Immediately her face broke into a dazzling smile. “No, I’m going to eat you up!”
She swung him up into her arms and nuzzled her face into his neck, making chomping sounds while he giggled.
It was fucking adorable.
