Chapter 22

Noah caught Mina as she crumpled to the ground.

Tank turned, still holding Brock. “What happened?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” Noah said.

Mina was moaning, her hand clutching at her head, her face contorting in pain.

Tristan climbed off the floor of the crazy shed and came over them, looking down at Mina. Recognition flashed across his face. “Oh, shit,” he muttered. He said sharply to Noah, “Bring her in the house.”

Noah swept her up in his arms and she screamed as if he was tormenting her. She was conscious but lost in the pain, unaware of anything going on around her.

His wolf growled. Mina was hurt. Mina should never be hurt.

“What’s wrong with Mommy?” Brock asked, his voice shaking. Tank just gave a worried rumble in his chest.

Noah carried Mina up the steps of the main cabin and Flynn held the door open for him. They laid her on one of the big couches in the living room. She was shaking all over now, so hard her teeth were rattling. Noah was terrified she was about to have a seizure.

Tristan moved to Mina and began examining her like a doctor, checking her pulse and prying open her eyelids to check her pupils. He laid one hand on her forehead and one on the top of her head, closing his eyes, his expression tense and focused.

Slowly the shaking subsided, though she was still moaning in pain.

Noah grabbed Tristan’s shoulder. “What the fuck is going on? What do you know about this?”

Tristan opened his eyes and sank to the floor by the couch, looking exhausted. He put his hands to his temples as if some of Mina’s pain had transferred to him.

“She witnessed the extermination of a shifter pack five years ago, up in Alaska,” he said. “Someone blurred her memory, but they did a hurried, clumsy job. It’s breaking down and the neural pathways are short-circuiting.”

“Why now?” Noah demanded. “And how the hell do you even know this?”

Tristan squeezed his head between his hands. “It’s happening because she recognized me.” He raised his head and looked Noah in the eyes. “I was there.”

Noah slammed his fist down on the coffee table. “Do something, then,” he said. “If you did this to her, you can undo it.”

“It wasn’t me that did it,” Tristan said. “And at one time, I could have handled this. But in case you haven’t noticed, I’m weak as a damned kitten, and thanks to fucking Jake Carson, my brain is a junkyard missing a whole shitload of spare parts. I don’t know if I can help her.”

“You have to try,” Noah said. His wolf growled. “Don’t make me bleed you.”

He took Mina’s hand and stroked the back of it. “Come on, babe. Hang in there.”

Tank and Flynn were hovering in the background, both looking concerned. Noah heard a tiny voice behind his shoulder.

“Please, Mr. Tristan, can’t you help Mommy?” Brock gulped back a sob. “I’m scared.”

Tristan raised his head and gazed at Brock, his face clearing slightly.

“Maybe,” he said, his voice husky. “Can you help me do it?”

Brock’s chin wobbled. “I don’t know how.”

“I’ll show you,” Tristan said.

Flynn narrowed his eyes. “Are you sure this is a good idea?”

Noah turned to Tristan. “It won’t hurt Brock, will it?”

Tristan shook his head. “It shouldn’t.” Seeing Noah’s hesitation, he added, “We need to stop everything from misfiring, or her brain could be seriously damaged.”
