Chapter 20
Mina thought her jaw was going to drop all the way down to the ground.
“Noah Angus McHottie Gray Wolf Reilly, did you just ask me to marry you?”
His face flushed red all the way up to his hairline, and he dropped his eyes. “Yeah, more or less. And I know it sucked and it wasn’t at all romantic, so you don’t have to tell me that.”
Mina had a funny feeling churning around in her stomach. She was surprised and scared and touched all at the same time.
“You’d do that for Brock and me?” she asked. “But why? You barely know us.”
Noah moved in closer, and raised his hand to stroke her cheek before cupping it around her face. His eyes were intense, looking dark blue in the dim light, but she could see little flecks of gold.
His wolf.
For some reason that didn’t scare her the way it had before. His wolf had done nothing but protect her and Brock, and now he was offering to protect them again.
He smiled, in that sweet way that made her heart want to melt. His thumb caressing her cheek was sending little tingles down her spine.
Her lady parts were loving it, and she couldn’t make her rational mind override them.
She slid her hands to his waist. “Tell me,” she whispered.
“You thought I was stalking you because I was investigating Robbie, but that’s not true. I didn’t even know Robbie existed until I met you.”
Noah’s fingers were still moving on her neck, making her want to melt into him. “It was always about you,” he said softly. “I fell for you the very first time I saw you.”
“In the coffee shop.”
He shook his head. “In your office.”
Mina frowned. “When were you ever in my office?”
Noah stepped away from her and propped his right leg up on one of the porch chairs, lifting the hem of his jeans to show the livid scar above his ankle. “After you saved my leg.”
Mina gasped.
Of course. He was Mr. Gray Wolf, but she hadn’t had time to connect it all until now.
She leaned over and touched his leg, running her finger lightly over the scar the way she had in her bedroom. She’d never dreamed then that this was her work.
“But it’s all healed,” she said in wonder.
Noah nodded. “Shifters heal crazy fast,” he said. “but that only goes so far. Without somebody to put everything back together first, I probably would have never walked again.”
He paused. “Which wouldn’t have mattered, if Briscoe had gotten hold of me.”
He stood up again and looked straight into her eyes. “You saved my life, Mina. I heard you call Robbie and send him and Briscoe back to the house. So when he threatened you the next day, and I realized that you’d jeopardized your custody case by calling him like that…”
He shrugged. “Well, that thing I told you earlier, about this scar and how I felt about the person who helped save my leg? I meant that.” He gazed into her eyes. “Every word.”
She bit her lips, tears coming to her eyes again. “When you told me that story, I wished someone would feel that way about me,” she admitted.
Noah slid his hands underneath hers and laced their fingers together.
“You deserve it,” he said. “You’re brave and amazing and caring, and I was so angry at the way that asshole treated you, that’s when I started investigating him. I was looking for ways to help you win your custody case.”
That floored her. “You were?”
