Chapter 15

They strode off through the forest, Mina feeling like she’d fallen down some kind of bizarre rabbit hole—to a place that was definitely not Wonderland.

Noah held out his hand to her. “Are you okay?”

She ignored the hand. She couldn’t…it was too much.

“No, I’m not okay,” she said. “I’m tromping through the forest in the middle of the night, following two giant men. One of them is half-naked and carrying my little boy, and the other one is wearing a knocked-out wolf like some bizarre fur stole, with his dong swinging in the wind. I have no idea where we’re going, and I want to go home.”

She hadn’t even mentioned the worst part—that she was crazy because she’d imagined her little boy had turned into a wolf. And that Noah done it too. And the father of her child was hunting them down.

The giant naked man gave her a half-grin. “Nobody’s making you look at my dong. But if you like it—”

Noah growled, a terrifying sound deep in his chest, and the naked giant gave him a sidelong look. “Like that, huh?” the giant said. He held his hands up, palms out. “No prob. Hands off.”

Now what the heck was that about?

She frowned at the dong-man, saying the first idiotic thing that came into her head. “Doesn’t going barefoot through the woods hurt your feet?”

“Nah,” he said, keeping his eyes front. “I’m used to it.”

He was used to strolling naked through the woods? Her mind started to speculate on why, and immediately shut down because she didn’t want to know any of this.

Brock didn’t have the same kind of cognitive dissonance. He stared at the huge man with his dark tangle of dreadlocks and ginormous muscles.

“Are you a woof?” he asked. “You’re very big.”

That got a bigger grin. “Like you, munchkin?” he said. “No, I’m not a ‘woof.’”

“Are you a bear?”

“Nah. They smell,” the man said. Brock gave a faint giggle.

They heard shots behind them in the distance, and then another grizzly roar and a jaguar scream. God. Mina didn’t want to think about the kind of carnage that could be happening back there. How had her life suddenly turned into this?

“Do you think they’re…all right?” she asked Noah quietly.

The giant man answered her. “They’re fine. A couple of bullets won’t hurt Tank. He and Jasmin have been bored lately; it’s good for them to get a little action.”

As Mina stared at him, he glanced at her and said, “Oh. You meant the humans.” He shrugged his big shoulders. “Nah, the crew is just playing with them. Bodies attract attention.”

That shut Mina up.

Noah had been silent the whole time. Finally he said, “Flynn, right?”

The giant flicked him a look. “Maybe. Depends who wants to know.”

“I work for Jesse Travis of the Silverlake pack. He’s been wondering where you are.”

That got him a longer look. “I’m not that findable when I don’t want to be found.”

Noah gestured toward the unconscious wolf. “Jesse’s been looking for him, too.”

“Good for him. You and I will have to discuss whether Travis is going to find him or not.”

Noah went silent for a minute. Then he jerked his chin toward the wolf and said, “Isn’t that up to him?”

Flynn muttered, “I hope so.”
