A Vow of Ruin

His gaze moved over my face. “I won’t let any demons eat you, by the way.”

“I’d appreciate that.”

His gaze went to my mouth, and he licked his lips. “I aim to please.”

“I thought your aim was to drive me crazy.”

He chuckled, and I couldn’t look away. Who the hell was this? I felt like I was in bed with a different male than the one I’d walked into this room with.

“It was never the main goal.”

His eyes were sleepy and sexy, his expression relaxed, and for the first time since I’d met him, his jaw wasn’t clenched so tight I thought his teeth might shatter. He pushed my thighs apart and pressed his hips against mine. He was hard. A shiver ran through me.

“What’s wrong with you? Where have you hidden the real Draven?” I said because I couldn’t have this. This sexy, sleepy, easygoing version of Draven was dangerous. Where was my uptight, eternally pissed-off alpha?

His brows lowered. “There’s nothing wrong with me. What are you talking about?”

“Why are you acting like this?”

“Like what?”

“Like this! Mr. Chill, all laid-back, happy-go-lucky.”

He dragged his nose up the side of my throat, and I shivered. “Because I’ve eaten and I’ve slept. It’s been a while.” He lifted his head. “I’ve barely done either, not since I saw you. But mostly because I’ve finally been inside my mate. I know you’re safe and I can keep you that way. I’m content, relaxed. Isn’t that a good thing? We can’t fight every moment of every day, can we?”

I didn’t know what to say. No, I didn’t want to fight all the time, but I didn’t want to like him too much either.

He searched my gaze, and his head tilted to the side. “Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll piss me off again, probably sooner rather than later.”

He saw right through me, right to my coward’s heart. I’d already told him all about my fear of letting him close in that field. But even if I hadn’t, the male seemed to see everything when it came to me. But then I’d been having feelings when it came to him as well.

And right now, he was feeling affectionate and playful. I didn’t need to tap into some mated couple thing to see that, though; it was plain on his handsome face.

“And what will you do when I piss you off again?” I asked, because I did love to push the guy.

He grinned. “I’ll do what I did tonight. I’ll bring you up here and fuck the angry right out of you.”

I stared up at him. “You are unbelievable.” And even more handsome when he grinned like that.

“Thanks.”

“I didn’t mean it as a compliment.”

He shrugged a broad shoulder. “That’s how I’m choosing to take it.” His green eyes glowed in the shadowed room. “Are you pissed at me again, little witch?”

Yes, absolutely in a playful mood. “I’m not, not pissed off, wolf man.”

He chuckled again. “Your smart mouth turns me on.”

“I have a feeling turning you on isn’t overly difficult.” My pulse fluttered faster, my belly curling and heating.

“All I have to do is look at you, smell you, fucking think about you, and I’m hard for my mate,” he said in a low, growly voice.

My mind scrambled at the way he said that. His mate. I was his mate. I knew it, but I hadn’t really believed it, not until this moment. If he wasn’t on top of me right then, I would have exploded out of this bed and run for the door because I knew, if I didn’t guard my heart, I could fall for Draven Moreau.

I just had to fight it.

Fight fate.
