The skinny one smirked. “He’s outnumbered and he knows it. He can’t win—”

A thud came right behind Meredith.

The clatter of steel came next, then the knife that had been pressed into her side was gone. The man holding her hissed. “What the fu—”

A gurgling sound came from him, then he released Meredith and collapsed. She spun as Kryos caught her around the waist and pushed her behind him. He was holding one of his knives, and she watched in horror as he wiped it clean on the side of his jeans, sheathed it, then drew the sword.

The other two men came at him all at once. Kryos spun, and with one brutal swing removed one man’s head, then he swung again with a roar and did the same with the second.

Meredith screamed and backed up, shaking, heart pounding, watching in horror as the two…no, three men, turned to ash before her eyes. “Oh my god.”

Kryos was moving toward her, the sword no longer in his hand. He had both his hands raised as if to show her he wasn’t a threat. “Let me explain, Meredith. I can explain what you just saw. But I need to get you away from here right now, before more of them show up.”

“M-more?”

He kept coming. “Yes.”

She stumbled back another step. “Kryos…what are you?”

“I’ll explain it all, I promise, but first we need to leave.”

Meredith shook her head, fear and confusion making her legs weak. He was closer, just an arm’s length away, his face clearer now. His eyes were no longer hard, they held that familiar warmth, were almost soft, and the angelic beauty of his face conveyed trust, safety, telling her to go with him.

“I know you’re scared, sweets. I know you’re confused. But I’m one of the good guys. The males who attacked you are not.”

Angelic.

That word had popped into her head the first time she’d seen him and had again every time he’d come into the diner afterward.

The wind ruffled the pure white feathers rising above his shoulders, his wings.

Her heart thudded harder. “You’re an angel…aren’t you?”

“I’m half angel, yes. Will you let me come closer, sweets?”

Kryos was half angel.

“Meredith?”

She nodded, and he closed the gap between them, his hands first on her shoulders, then pulling her in closer, wrapping her in his arms. He let out a shuddering breath before he looked down at her. “I’m going to take you somewhere safe now, okay?”

“Okay,” she whispered. She was pretty sure she was in shock.

He scooped her up in his arms, and she wrapped hers around his neck. “Hold on tight and don’t let go.”

His wings started moving, and Meredith did as he said, she held on as tightly as she could as they lifted off the ground.

As they shot up into the night sky.

Chapter 6

Kryos held Meredith tightly to him, trying hard not to think about what would have happened if he hadn’t gotten to her in time.

David, that fucking spineless coward, had run away, leaving her there with three twisted, sadistic demons. That little prick didn’t know that’s what they were, though, as far as he was concerned, they were three humans. And he’d sacrificed Meredith without a second thought to save his own skin.

Kryos wanted to hunt the fucker down and make him pay for that.

His revenge would have to wait, though. Getting Meredith home, his home, was the most important thing right then. Followed by a lot of explaining.
