“Why do you sound so surprised?”
She shrugged. “I don’t remember you dating anyone with glasses.”
Dating? Maddie and me? Is that what she wants? “I missed you,” he said.
She beamed. “Is that why you came home, to tell me that?”
“I wasn’t sure you’d be here, but yeah. Plus, I wanted to make sure we were okay and I didn’t screw anything up the other night.”
“You mean by leaving me to my own devices?”
A wave of heat washed over him. He’d never known this side of her, and it blew him away. “Is that what happened after I left?”
Instead of answering, she turned it around on him. “What about you?”
“I’ll confess if you will.”
She nodded, and her cheeks turned pink.
“I would have liked to see that,” he said.
“Don’t you have to get back to work?”
“Trying to get rid of me again?”
She playfully swatted his arm. “For the last time, I’m not trying to get rid of you!”
“Good.” He considered scooping her up, taking her upstairs, and finishing what they’d started. However, he needed to get back to work. “Will you be home tonight?”
“I’m meeting a client, but I shouldn’t be too late.”
“I’ll wait up,” he said, brooking no argument.
“Okay,” she said, but she sounded a bit nervous.
He reached out and cupped her cheek. “Listen, you’re in charge here. Whatever happens, it’s up to you.”
“Thank you for saying that.”
“I guess I’ll see you later, then.”
“Okay.”
He leaned in and pressed a brief kiss to her lips. Then, before he got carried away, he turned and went out the door.
Twenty
Later that afternoon, Maddie was still flying high from Cody’s impromptu visit and scorching kiss. She couldn’t wait until after her meeting so she could come home and finish what they’d started. This time, she wouldn’t take no for an answer!
She was just getting ready to leave for the meeting when her phone rang. She quickly fished it out of her purse, hoping her client might be calling to cancel. That way, she’d get to spend the whole evening with Cody.
She looked at the screen and frowned. It was Wyatt, and while she considered not answering, she worried he’d keep calling and disrupt her evening.
“I only have a few minutes,” she said in lieu of hello.
“This won’t take long.”
“I plan on getting the rest of my things this weekend, if that’s what you’re wondering.”
