“I’ll go inside and pay,” Bryce said after they’d shaken hands.
“I already took care of it.”
“Thanks, buddy. I’ll get you next time.”
“No worries.”
Bryce loaded his bag on the back of the cart, and off they went with Jamie driving. They were playing the regular course instead of the par-three course he’d played with Chloe, but a series of memories flashed through his head anyway. He’d loved teaching her the game and watching her chew on her bottom lip before every shot. She’d approached golf the way she approached everything in life, with gusto and determination.
“So, what’s new?” Jamie said after they’d teed off at the first hole and were back in the cart. “Your assistant still trying to get in your pants?”
“I wish I never told you that, but yes.”
Jamie chuckled. “It’s okay, man. If you’ve got it, flaunt it!”
Yeah, I’ve got it alright, but not for Gianna.
They had to wait for the group ahead of them to finish on the green before taking their second shots, so Bryce decided to dive right in.
“There’s something I wanted to talk to you about. It’s about Chloe.”
Jamie’s eyes went wide. “Chloe? As in my wife’s best friend, Chloe?”
“Do you know anyone else named Chloe?”
Jamie pretended to think about it, and Bryce playfully punched him in the arm. Jamie rubbed the spot and said, “Don’t tell me she screwed up and you have to fire her.”
“No, no. Nothing like that.”
“What, then?”
Bryce rubbed his stubbly jaw, not having bothered to shave that morning, and realized this was harder than he thought. “Well…”
Jamie interrupted. “Oh no.”
“What?”
“Chloe went out with Seb recently, didn’t she?”
“Yeah, so?”
“Did you walk in on them having sex or something?”
Bryce scowled at him, mostly because he hated the very thought of it. “No!”
“Whew! What is it, then?”
“I’m trying to tell you. Chloe and I…we…I have feelings for her.”
Jamie narrowed his eyes at him. “You and Chloe?”
Bryce nodded.
“But you never mess around with your employees.”
“Exactly.”
Jamie slowly nodded. “Wow.”
