You’ll Be the Death of Me

“That’s work. This is personal.” My eyes go to the pool house. I can see Matteo through the window.

He's watching. He's already back in a suit too.

It's ridiculous. He’s ridiculous.

"I can have one of my bodyguards dump him in the Aegean," Yorgos offers.

I shake my head. "That's sweet, but no. I love him, despite everything.”

His eyes go to the pool house. “So you finally got over that fed, huh?”

“Who?” I ask.

“That fed you couldn’t bring yourself to leave? The mission you kept extending? What was his name again?”

My cheeks flush.

That’s not what happened.

I didn’t.

Uh—

“It wasn’t like that. I didn’t leave because he was a good source,” I say.

“Oh. A good source. Of course. I wouldn’t leave either.” He smiles, so we both know he means a good fuck.

I blush, like he’s caught me. Like I’ll do anything for satisfaction.

Including with him.

His eyes go to my chest. He and traces the line of the robe to the pocket over my left hip. "There's a key to my place in the city. If you can sneak away, I'll be there tomorrow.” He brings his lips to my ear. “But, Jamie, if you’re here for something else, you’ll be the one sleeping with the fishes.”

JAMIE

Again, Matteo keeps me busy all day.

Again, I indulge in the fantasy of the two of us as a normal couple. No need to charm an old ally. No plan to kill Matteo.

Only sun and ruins and olives and ouzo.

Every time I allude to the evening, Matteo holds strong. He’s there, if I need backup.

Otherwise, he trusts my instincts.

He’s totally fine with the possibility of me sleeping with Yorgos.

Hell, if I want, I can bring a camera, and live stream it to him, so he knows what’s going on. Or at the very least, I can use my phone as a mic, so he can come if shit hits the fan.

A totally reasonable suggestion for a spy on a mission.

Which doesn’t bother me at all.

He’s Matteo.
