You’ll Be the Death of Me

“Perhaps, but I don’t think so. I think you’re after something else. So go distract Miss Moriarty with your sexy smolder and I’ll sneak out with the laptop. Bring it back to the good guys.”

“How do I know I can trust you?” I ask with as much concern as I can muster. Ultimately, I have what I need.

Camille motions for me to lean closer. When I do, she whispers the MI6 code word of the day in my ear. “Call it in if you’re not sure. Of course, if you do talk to someone at Mi6, they’ll tell you to kill me. There’s a mole who wants to keep his identity hidden. Or maybe you saw that already. Maybe he was on that laptop.”

I’ve had my suspicions of a mole for a long time. Olympus is always one step ahead of us.

“Is that why you’re here, because you work for the mole?” I ask.

She shrugs and recites the French motto. Liberty. Equality. Brotherhood. “No. I’m here because I work for the government. You saw what was on that laptop. You know enough,” she says.

“It’s encrypted.” That’s technically true.

“But deep down, you know.” She looks me in the eyes. “It explains a lot, doesn’t it?”

Yes. But there’s always another reason. If she has proof, I want it. “A trade then. I let you go. You send me something I can use.”

“I’m afraid I don’t have anything on me, but I’ll tell you what, when I’m back in Paris, I’ll put something together. Leave it at a dead drop. Give me a pen and I’ll write instructions.”

I find a pen and paper.

She waits dutifully then she draws a map. “We came up with a plan. Your girlfriend and I. You talk to me. Then you go to her. She distracts you with sex. I take the laptop and leave. It’s win/ win for all three of us, no?”

“Do you really think that’s possible?” I ask. “That all our goals can be aligned?”

She shrugs. “Above my paygrade.”

“You’re a lot like her.”

“Don’t get any ideas about falling in love with me too,” she says.

A laugh spills from my lips. It’s an absurd reaction to the threat of death.

It’s perfect.

“No. You wouldn’t. Your heart only beats for her. It’s sweet. Dangerous, but sweet.” She shakes her head the poor fool is going to fuck himself over with this one.

I can’t give in too easily, or she’ll realize I’m ahead of her.

“How do I know you don’t report back to the mole?” I ask. “That you won’t find cell service and tell him to come kill me.”

“It doesn’t matter what I do,” she says. “Someone is coming to kill you and Assassin Barbie in the next few hours. If I know you have that laptop, the mole at Mi6 knows, and Olympus knows, and their competitors know, and the CIA knows…” She shakes her head you’re fucked. “You’ve got to get out of here ASAP.”

No, I’m safe as long as she’s here. Because if I’m right, someone who has his hand in every organization knows she’s here.

And they won’t come and blow their cover.

But as soon as Camille reports we’re alive, we’re in danger.

“And how do I know you won’t grab a gun and shoot us?” I ask.

“How can two people who are so clearly in love have so little trust?” She shakes her head and mutters a French curse. “Notre amie already moved the guns. Confirm it yourself if you don’t believe me.”

I pick up her handcuffs.

She offers her wrists dutifully.

I check the space is clear.
