YVAINE

After three hours of advanced pathology, I darted home and took the fastest shower ever recorded.

I loved the detective work of running tests to uncover what kind of evil was waging war inside the body. Pathology was that bridge between science and medicine; had it not been for neurosurgery, it would’ve been my specialty.

“Dinner together?” Lachlan called through our mind-link. “The boys are ordering pizzas.”

With a fluffy towel wrapped around my torso and one in my hair, I pulled my backpack from under the bed and left it open on the mattress. “Sorry, I’m seeing Logan tonight—”

An exaggerated groan made me pause and smile.

“The douchebag’s coming here? I’ll prepare the eggs.”

I giggled. Ten-year-old Lachlan used to pelt the neighbor kids with eggs. It got so bad that the packhouse cook started hiding them or she’d have nothing left for Omelette Day.

“No. I’m driving there.”

“He isn’t even picking you up? What an ass.”

Biting my lip, I assessed two pajama options—one cute, with small pineapples, and the other more lace than fabric. Pineapples won.

With a sigh, I explained that it had been my decision, that Logan had offered to pick me up, but I turned it down.

“Fine,” he grunted. “I’ll come with you.”

“To watch you two bark at each other all night? No thanks. If I wanted that, I’d volunteer at a kennel.”

I glanced at my planner. ER—9:15 a.m. Since I’d be heading straight to the hospital from Dark Diamond in the morning, I packed tomorrow’s clothes, textbooks, and lentil soup for lunch.

“Here you go.” I set down a bowl of raw beef and apricots for Zeus. My baby trotted after me everywhere, sensing me leaving.

“Please,” Lachlan scoffed. “I can manage one night after fourteen hours on a plane.”

“The Dark Diamond players will all be there. Logan lives with some.”

“Of course he does,” my twin said in his condescending tone. “Mind-link me when you get there.”

“Love you too, Lachy.”

Bass throbbed onto the street from a modern gray building, its walls scored with deep scratch marks. Didn’t they use stairs here? A large banner with a heart made of tiny diamonds hung above the entrance. On the third-floor balcony, guys leaned over the railing with beers in hand, everyone smelling of Dark Diamond.

I checked my GPS. This is it.

I pulled out my phone to text Logan when two girls rounded the corner. Eavesdropping wasn’t my habit, but a certain nickname made it impossible not to.

“I hope Thor’s here tonight,” one sighed dreamily. Zelda wanted to bite her head off and play pool with the bits of her brain. “I’ve only seen him from a distance.”

“He’s a monster in bed,” her friend replied, eyes glued to her phone. “Leah said neither she nor her cousin could keep up.”

Something inside me winced. Has Logan always had sex with multiple women at once?

The first girl giggled. “I always carry my lube with me.”

Locking my car, I slipped my phone back in my pocket, the message for Logan unsent. “Excuse me.”

They both turned.

“I was invited, but I’m not sure which apartment it is. Mind if I come with you?”
