Though saying that I was disappointed after discovering Logan’s massacre was an understatement. I wrinkled my nose, the memory barely one day old…

“It was Lucien,” Logan said with a shrug. “He took over. Nothing I could do.”

I cast my best disapproving look at him. His hands reached for mine.

“Let me get this straight.” I slapped his hands, and the sparks, away. “Lucien took control because he overheard these guys making mean comments about me and my pack, dragged you outside, and then beat them half to death?”

“Yeah.” He shrugged again. “The beast came out of nowhere. I told you he’s rabid.”

For a split second, black veins crawled around his eyes, red flickering through the irises. Logan blinked hard. Was that Lucien protesting the accusation?

“If Lucien shifted, how are your clothes still intact?” Surprise flashed over his face.

“Sometimes he can take over without a full shift.”

I gestured at the bodies. “So this had nothing to do with Paul?” Logan’s jaw flexed. “Or the story I told you?”

Another shrug. Not a yes, not a no.

“And you didn’t follow them outside because you were jealous?”

“No.” He kicked a pebble. “But you followed me.”

“I wouldn’t need to if you behaved!”

“You don’t trust me?”

“I do! But this isn’t about me!”

A muffled groan interrupted us. Logan narrowed his eyes like a butcher realizing his merchandise was still moving.

I stepped forward. “I have to see if they’re okay—”

“Touch them,” he said quietly, “and I’ll mark you.”

My own mate? Blackmailing me?

I glared, clenching my fists as he folded his arms, one eyebrow raised that said, Go on. I dare you.

I could almost hear those broken bones knitting back together all wrong under the werewolf’s rapid healing, so I took a deep breath and tried to reason with the unreasonable apex predator huffing next to me. “I need to set their bones before they heal crooked.”

“If these idiots end up limping for life, good. Then they’ll stop bothering women.”

“Logan.” I pointed a finger to the wall. “Go sit over there.”

“I’m not a dog.” His voice dropped.

“Well, you’re certainly acting like one.”

More pained groans. Shaking my head, I walked over and kneeled beside the victims, the giant shadow hovering, watching my every move.

Had this really been Lucien? My instincts said otherwise.

Three tibias and two femurs later, I reached for the cuts.

Given the snarling behind me, Logan had had enough. “They can heal the rest on their own.”

“The cuts might get infected.”
