I glanced at the mess in my room—dirty clothes, unmade bed, pillows all over the place, and, well, all the wet tissues I used after thinking about her. The taxidermied weasel that I had tucked inside the fireplace was definitely judging me. I flew across the room, kicking clothes under the bed and trashing the tissues. I had no time to rescue the weasel, before diving back into bed. The second I buried myself under the tangle of blankets, I realized that was a huge mistake. I felt like I’d just wrapped myself in an oven.
I lay perfectly still, hoping the soundproofing worked for werewolves so she couldn’t hear my heart flipping and flopping around like a fish out of water.
I cursed, then froze completely. She was right outside my door now. My lips twitched. Is she hesitating? Is my little bunny doc worried about waking me? So endearing. I could hear her tiny breaths and count her frantic heartbeats from here. If I concentrated enough, I could sense the blood rushing through her veins. “She smells so good,” I groaned softly and closed my eyes, inhaling her scent before snapping them back open. Hold on. Why was she here?
“Mate wants to mate,” Lucien chimed in.
“Shut up,” I grunted. I usually kept him locked away, but Yvaine had been grilling me about letting him out, so as long as he didn’t take over and murder everyone, I let him be. But now he was planting ideas. What if…she really did want to mate?
Damn. I didn’t even have condoms. “Those plastic things are useless,” the commentary in my head continued.
“That’s why you use more than one, you pup,” I shot back, locking him away again. Goddess help me, what if she actually came in here to—
I took another deep breath and tried to calm the hell down. This was Yvaine. Sweet, adorable Bunny Doc. There was no way she was outside my door at 3 a.m. because she wanted to jump me…right? Right?
Oh damn, boxers. I wasn’t wearing any! I almost bolted out of bed to grab something—anything—but then I remembered the state of the bathroom. It currently looked like the locker room after a wereball game or practice.
My used boxers were chilling on the wet floor with a bunch of soggy towels I had used over the past few days, along with probably a whole puddle of water. I’d never been neat; everyone knew that. I grew up with a grandma and pack staff who took care of all the cleaning. Back at the apartment on campus, one of the freshmen picked up for extra cash and beers.
“Logan?” Yvaine whispered, soft as a feather, but to me, it sounded like a scream. “Are you awake?”
Awake? Bunny Doc, I’ve never been so awake in my entire life. My eyes flicked down to my lower abdomen. So fucking awake. “Yeah,” I croaked out. And before I could say another word, the door handle jiggled.
Shit. A second later, there she was—my adorable little mate. I zeroed in on her lips, which I definitely hadn’t kissed enough yet, but then I noticed her outfit. Oh man. She was dressed in a small pink camisole and flannel pajama bottoms with sheep on them, her bare feet peeking out beneath the hem. Cute, tiny feet that I bet I could fit right in my mouth, like the perfect snack. Yum.
She bit her lip, and our eyes met. “Hi.”
“Hey,” I breathed out, gulping. The blanket was glued to my chin.
“Would you, um, mind if I slept here tonight? I-I can’t sleep.”
If I minded? Was this a test from the universe? If it was, I was failing hard.
She’ll think I’m some creep when she notices I’m not wearing anything. I held my breath, panicking and sweating like one of the fucking pigs Lucien had devoured.
“Sure you can.” I laughed nervously, glancing at the space next to me. She definitely can’t fit without touching me. “Can you just…” I cleared my throat. “Wait outside the room for a sec?”
“Why? I don’t mind if you’re only wearing boxers.” Yvaine blushed, and for a second, I forgot about my plan. She was so damn cute and so…mine. How did I get this lucky?
“Logan?” She snapped me out of it.
I blinked like a clueless fool. “Yes? Ah, yes. Er, I prefer wearing sweatpants,” I lied through my teeth, because no way I was about to admit I was naked.
“Oh, all right.” She glanced around the room. “I can grab them for you.”
“Oh no, don’t worry about it. I, uh, left a pair in the bathroom.”
“It’s okay, I can just go and—”
“No!” I blurted, a little too loud, because she stiffened, looking back at me with wide eyes.
“Maybe I should just go back to my room…” She lowered her chin.
Oh, fantastic. Well done, Logan. You’ve officially made your mate sad. I sighed, realizing I hadn’t felt this stressed in…maybe ever.
“No, no.” I sat up, one hand clutching the blanket to my chest. “The truth is…I didn’t clean the bathroom. It’s, uh, kind of a disaster.”
Her face softened, and she gave me this little smile. Thank the Goddess.
