Relief washed over me.
“He’s my son.” My spoon froze halfway to my mouth. “I don’t advertise it, since you know how it is with Comet. They don’t particularly like Dark Diamond and—”
I stopped listening.
Ruby clawed toward the surface, desperate to find that mate of ours. And maybe lock him in a cage for…years, until he was old and less pretty.
I should have been ecstatic—Mrs. Tina was Logan’s grandmother and fate had handed me another piece of him before I even knew him—but I wasn’t.
One thought drowned out everything else: He was coming here to see another girl.
“Star? Are you okay?” Her palm caressed my forehead. Oh, I must have been boiling.
My gaze found her worried one. “Mrs. Tina, Logan, the captain of your wereball team—”
“My grandson!” She brightened like a Christmas shop in December.
“He’s my mate.”
Then I smelled it, the scent designed to make me lightheaded.
“Gran,” Logan called, “I don’t have much time. If my mate—” His voice trailed into a strangled squeak when our eyes met through the window.
There he was.
That mate of mine. More dashing than ever in black pants and a wereball tank top. Golden brows framed eyes that were usually naughty but were now wide.
Good.
He sauntered into the little home, opening the door with his shoulder. “Yvaine!” He huffed a nervous laugh.
“Moon Goddess!” The old lady practically died and resurrected right in front of us with her shock. “You’ve made me the happiest wolf alive!”
She squeezed me, droning on and on about how beautiful and smart our pups would be, how she’d known all along we would be perfect together, yadda, yadda, yadda. I was fuming; I could almost hear my hair sizzling. Logan? He dabbed a tissue over his sweaty temple and paled further and further.
“You were coming here to meet a girl? Without telling me?” I said icily the moment Mrs. Tina went to get meatballs, Logan’s favorite childhood food.
Unbelievable. Intolerable.
“Technically…” Logan raised both hands defensively. “But it’s not what it looks like. I was just trying to placate Gran. And how amazing this chick turned out to be you!”
He was lucky that the mate bond carried the truth beneath his frantic explanation. Still.
“Lucien didn’t want to go,” Lucien whined through our mind-link. “Lucien tried to stop Human. Lucien only loves Mate! Lucien promise!”
“Shut up, Lucien,” Logan blurted aloud.
“Don’t talk badly to Lucy!” I hissed. “Actually, I’ll only talk to him from now on.”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to upset you—”
“I am upset.” I walked back and forth in the tiny room. “Why do you always have to hide things, Logan? I thought we were past that!”
“I didn’t mean to make you angry.”
“I’m not angry, I’m disappointed!”
Mrs. Tina waltzed back in carrying several frozen bags. “Here you go! I made a lot for when you visit, just the way you like them, Lolo!”
