“Show-off,” I reprimanded while Ruby giggled like a pup with a lollipop.

Ruby padded over to him and rubbed her muzzle onto his. “Thank you, Lucy.”

All the fur around his neck puffed up. “Lucien provide.”

He split open the boar belly with one sweep of his claws, selecting the richest cuts for Ruby. As he worked, we just watched him.

“Mate?” He tilted his head, the blood drip, drip, dripping down his front. “Food?”

With a massive grin, Ruby let her mate feed her straight from his mouth. After he’d chewed it! I respected the lycan way of feeding each other but I ran off then.

“Where Mate going?” Lucien inquired.

“Wait here.”

“But—”

“Stay!” Ruby ordered.

Lucien bobbed his head and sat down, tail wagging. “Lucien stay.”

She vanished into the forest.

This was our first hunt together—Ruby’s and mine. We did end up with a small wound on our foreleg but it had almost healed by the time we returned, though Ruby hooked a claw into it and reopened it.

“I’ve hunted a bigger animal,” she announced, flashing Lucien a grin full of fangs and blood. “For you.”

We enjoyed Lucien’s mouth dropping at the gigantic elk we dragged in by one antler.

Our favorite part though? Lucien and Logan both fussing over that wound on my leg no bigger than a pinecone as they bickered with each other for letting us go alone.

LOGAN

My cheeks hurt from all the smiling.

I really wanted to see Yvaine; I had no idea how she’d react to me. I could only hope watching our lycans together had softened her opinion of…us.

After feasting, Lucien cleaned Ruby’s muzzle, licked her paws, and insisted she drink from a nearby pond.

“What Mate want now?” His tail thumped against a tree. He was hanging on to her every move.

“Not sure.” A cute yawn escaped her.

“Take time. No rush.” Lucien yanked her to him, and she collided into his chest. Her eyes narrowed. “Mate went too far from Lucien,” he explained, whining.

I sighed, rolling my eyes. My beast had basically glued himself onto her.

“Goddess, Lucien, stop.” I dragged a hand down my face.

They continued their cuddling session, not bothered by time, space, or the forest’s inhabitants.

Though something changed when a female rogue popped out, foam around her mouth, heat rolling off her scent. She was in season.

Lucien glanced at her, winced, and proceeded to hide his muzzle in Ruby’s neck. Her reaction couldn’t have been more different—a low, possessive growl vibrated through her chest, scaring off the rogue.

Then a pensive look befell her. Those impossibly blue eyes settled on us and I could discern Yvaine looking back at me through them. I heard her heartbeat rise, while mine stopped completely.

Lucien tried to straighten up, but she planted one paw on his chest and he immediately surrendered.
