All I’d managed to do was kill her wolf, put her in a nice coma, rob more weeks of her life, and give her family enough heart attacks to last an eternity.
My eyes stung, tears spilling. Ah, damn it. I scrubbed at them with the heel of my palm, but the tears kept coming anyway.
Time had crawled inside this concrete hole. No one knew when she’d wake, or who she’d be when she did, but doctors had already started talking about physiotherapy—learning to walk, think, and live wolfless.
I’d crippled the love of my life.
A growl ripped from my throat as I buried both hands in my hair, yanking hard enough to tear the strands out.
I punched the wall, adding more decoration on it and on my knuckles. What could I say? I was an aesthetics kind of guy.
“Her body is in a comatose state from shock. Shock!” Another punch. “Shock!”
That was usually how every conversation started down here. Then came the endless parade of what ifs.
“What if my mark poisoned her? What if she never forgives me? What if she never wakes up? What if—”
“Maybe she’s already awake!” Killian cheered through the reinforced wall.
“And you’re mates,” Callum added, for once leaving his mate’s side since the incident to be here with me. “There’s no way you could hurt her like that.”
“Maybe it was a test.” Claudia’s nasal voice drifted through next. “Maybe she isn’t meant to be our Luna.”
“Shut up before I expel you from the team,” Bellatrix snarled.
“It was only a thought,” Claudia muttered.
“She’s right,” Sheila chimed in. “Dark Diamond needs a strong Luna.”
I stared at the ceiling, ignoring them. I regretted giving those two twenty orgasms when we had a couple of threesomes after the games in our first year.
“I’ve never met Yvaine,” Lydia said, “and maybe she’s wonderful. But keeping our options open isn’t exactly bad.”
Her gaze lingered on me and I suddenly wished bleach worked on eyeballs.
Half of Bellatrix’s wereball teammates had practically moved in here to support the Alpha family. Support. Right.
Five of them had asked me to choose them as Luna in the moments I was alone because Tank Man, Greg, Dylan, and Killian happened to be showering, eating, taking a shit, or all three at once. The girls had faced Lucien’s wrath. The beast had growled so loud through me that guards hurried down from above, but those were the only times I’d laughed in weeks. Two girls fainted, two burst into tears, and one pissed herself.
Outside my cell, they kept blabbing. Inside it, I eased back down, stretched my legs out, and shut my eyes.
Lucien was already there, clanging around inside my head. “I need stronger drugs so you’ll shut the fuck up.”
“Go to Mate!” He was a broken record.
The only benefit was that the internal shouting match drowned out all the boring chatting.
“Did you hear that?” Callum asked at some point.
Bellatrix clasped his shoulder. “You hear it too?”
I ignored them.
The conversations died one by one; every head turned toward the corridor.
Bored and worried, I couldn’t care less.
There was a dull thud that got closer, louder. A storm outside, probably.
