He socked Sam in the chest. Over the shrimp tattoo, Jaz realized as he socked Reg back in the same spot. It made her missLilian and all the inside jokes they had together. Lilian wouldn’t be able to fix anything, but she’d be a wonderful distraction. She needed a distraction right now.

“So,” Sam said as Reg vanished out the front door. “Do you … want coffee?”

She shook her head.

“Hot chocolate?”

Another headshake.

“Alright,” Sam said softly. “What do you want?”

There was a fire in Jaz’s chest. It felt like it would eat her up, and not in a fun way. She wanted something to take hermind off Brandon. Something to make her feel good. She wanted …

Jaz’s gaze dropped to Sam’s mouth. That same mouth that had given her so much pleasure last night. There had been momentswhen she couldn’t concentrate on anything except how incredible it felt. The world had fallen away to Sam’s warm hands onher hips, his mouth hot at her core.

Sam’s eyes went half lidded as she stepped closer. He swallowed, and Jaz watched his throat move. Even if they never touchedagain, Jaz would think about the sounds he made for the rest of her life. Those helpless gasps, the guttural groans. He’deven whimpered when she touched his wings just right.

“I feel like I’m gonna vibrate out of my skin,” Jaz managed to say. “And you—last night, you made me feel so good. And I don’twant to pressure you into anything you don’t want to do …”

She winced. She was really butchering this; she could’ve been cool about it. But here she was, too big and too serious andtoo much, like always.

“You just seem like you have issues about it,” she continued as everything in her screamed to shut up for once. “Like, I don’twant to pry—”

“I don’t have issues,” Sam said thinly. He was blinking fast, the half-lidded lust chased away with Jaz’s talk of pressure. But he also wasn’t moving away, which was … good? It was hard to read him when he wasn’t shaking with hunger.

“Sure,” Jaz said. “Right, okay. Um. I mean. Do you want … ?”

She trailed off, the sentence well and truly destroyed. She placed her hands on his chest, fully expecting to have them awkwardlylifted off and for him to step back and put some distance between them. Just because he was letting her stay here while theroads were cleared didn’t mean he wanted a repeat of last night.

But he didn’t move. He just stood there, staring, his lips parted. Fire flickered deep in his eyes, a gorgeous swirl of orangeand yellow. Then he blinked and the fire was gone. Had Jaz imagined it?

She opened her mouth to ask if she’d read this wrong. It cut off in her throat as he leaned forward, his nose brushing hers.

“I do,” he admitted, hushed. “I want.”

The fire in his eyes flickered to life once more. This time it didn’t go away. He gazed down at her, his nose brushing hers. His fiery eyes met hers. Waiting.

Jaz wound her hands in his hair and dragged him down.

Chapter 9

Sam could feel it as they stumbled toward the bedroom. The incubus wanted out.

It didn’t make sense. He was full. He’d had twinges of this when he wasn’t hungry, but they were only ever twinges. Easily ignored.

He couldn’t ignore this. Every touch made it worse, desire and desperation tumbling off Jaz in molten waves. He couldn’t usuallysmell emotions when he wasn’t hungry, so why could he smell hers? Why was she affecting him so much? His wings shifted underhis skin. Fire flickered behind his eyes. He sighed as Jaz ran her hands through his hair, inadvertently scratching the spothis horns wanted to burst through. By the time he had Jaz naked on his bed, he was devoting half of his mindpower to stoppingthe change.

Jaz traced circles into his shoulder blades. “Are you going to shift?”

“I don’t—” Sam paused, slamming his eyes shut at the wave of flames that wanted to rush through them. “I don’t usually—”

“I know,” Jaz said. “But do you want to?”

He opened his eyes. The heat had gone, with no pink tinge washing over Jaz as she lay underneath him. She was already panting, her pupils swollen and her lips kiss-bitten. She smelled like salt, the sweat from last night not yet washed off. For somestrange, primal reason, this made him want to bury his nose in her neck and breathe in. Some of that sweat was his, mixedtogether as he fucked her last night.

He asked, “Do you want me to?”

“It was hot.” She bit her lip, teeth squeezing hard enough for the skin to go white. “But if you don’t want to feed …”
