Still fighting.
Still alive.
“Keith…” His name came out as a shattered sob against my lips.
The one holding me said, “Your boyfriend’s insane.”
“He’s trying to save her,” the cane-sword wielder said quietly.
Gunfire erupted again, impossibly loud in the enclosed tunnel.
Louder groans answered.
More undead.
Too many.
My fingers curled desperately into the stranger’s jacket as cold terror spread through my body inch by inch.
Keith was back there alone.
Outnumbered.
Trapped inside that subway car while the dead closed in from both sides.
The barrage of gunshots continued for what felt like hours.
Sharp bursts.
Shorter pauses.
Closer together.
Until they stopped.
My own ragged breathing filled my ears. The rifle fire that had anchored me to hope Keith was still alive was suddenly gone.
My heart felt like it stopped beating inside my chest. “No…”
The stranger carrying me slowed slightly as my body went limp over his shoulder.
Behind us, somewhere far back in the darkness, the undead shrieked victoriously.

KEITH
“Keith!”
My name ricocheted violently through the subway tunnel, bouncing off the stained, grotesque walls until it sounded like the entire underground was haunted by her voice. The echo warped around the guttural groans of the undead and the distant thunder of pounding footsteps retreating farther away from me.
“I love you, too!”
Her words shredded something inside my chest.
Every instinct in my body begged me to run after her. I desperately wanted to.
“I love you so much. Please, don’t leave me!”
