Luck glanced over him quickly before nodding. “Nah, you’re good.”
Without another word, Oxi calmly started getting dressed again.
My chest tightened painfully as another memory surfaced.
Charles.
A man from the Oasis who’d hidden his infection after an infected mountain lion attack. He nearly killed the woman he loved after turning during the night. We all almost paid for it.
If someone had checked him sooner…maybe things would’ve been different. It could’ve saved us the trauma.
The knot in my stomach loosened slightly.
“Okay.” I exhaled shakily, wiping at my face again. “I understand why that’s important. But you’re still three random men I don’t know.” My throat tightened painfully around the next words. “My boyfriend’s…”
Gone.
“…and now, you want me to get naked in front of all of you?”
“I’m naked,” Luck pointed out helpfully before immediately spinning in a slow circle with his arms out.
“Oh my God.” I turned my face sharply toward the wall before I could see anything. “Why are you all like this?”
“Good,” Oxi announced from somewhere nearby.
“Thank you,” Luck replied before getting dressed again.
“Only one of us needs to check you over,” Maddox explained carefully as he stood and started undressing next. “The other two will turn around.”
Luck pointed at him. “See? We’re trying to be respectful apocalypse weirdos.”
“Good,” Luck told Maddox after a moment, and Mad immediately pulled his clothes back on.
I refused to look at any of them during the process. The last man I’d seen naked was Keith. And now…
The crushing realization hit me so hard my eyes burned instantly again.
“Spencer.” Luck’s voice softened noticeably when he said my name.
“I haven’t been bitten,” I snapped too quickly.
“Probably not,” he murmured gently. “But we still gotta make sure.”
The closet fell quiet again.
“Who do you want to check you over?” he asked carefully. “The other two of us will face the wall and swear not to look.”
I stared down at my backpack sitting near my feet. My chest ached so badly it felt bruised from the inside out.
“I don’t care who,” I whispered finally.
My fingers shook as I unhooked my backpack and let it fall softly onto the concrete. Then, I shrugged out of my cardigan and folded it carefully on top of the bag just to give my hands something to do besides tremble.
“I’ll check,” Maddox said immediately. “You two, wall.”
“Okay.” Oxi turned without complaint.
“Whatever makes her comfortable,” Luck added quietly before facing the opposite wall himself.
