“Yes, I’m fine. Are you ok?”
“What? What do you mean am I ok; you're the one calling me so late,” I said exasperated.
“I’m fine, but you're not,” she said, as my lip trembled again.
I wanted to tell her everything, but there were just some things you didn’t share with your abuela.
“Talk to me, Corazon,” she said softly.
“I ended things with Ezra and Oliver,” I said, and the floodgates opened. “It was just for fun and I thought I should end it because it wasn’t going to go anywhere and…”
Fuck, how much could I tell her?
“You can tell me,” she said.
“I didn’t meet them at the burger joint, I met them at work and my boss knows and she asked me stuff about them. I wasn’t comfortable letting her know, but she asked if we were together. She knows about us and I panicked,” I said quickly. “She also said they would hurt me because well, their line of work is dangerous. There's also a man who knew I gave Ezra a dance which freaked me out and I was worried he might do something because he thinks we might be together or I don’t know. Now I’m afraid that….”
I stopped speaking, feeling the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
“Corazon, do you feel that?”
“Abuela,” I said, my heart racing. “Is Abuelo ok?”
“He’s fine, but I think you need to call your men to see if they are ok,” she said, as a picture I had on my wall fell.
I screamed at the sound, my body immediately going into panic mode as the omen meant something bad was about to happen.
“Mija, you need to call them now, but you call me immediately when you find out they are ok,” she said, as Maleficent started meowing loudly. “I’ll pray.”
“Okay,” I said, as she hung up.
Maleficent weaved between my legs, meowing more loudly. I opened my phone and went to my contacts, realizing I didn’t have either of their numbers.
Shit, what the hell was I going to do?
Looking through my contacts, I called Mason.
“Hey, are you ok?” he answered.
“Do you know Ezra and O from the club?” I asked, trying not to sound panicked. “O looks like he’s from the mob and Ezra is a big—”
“The guy who is nonspeaking?” He finished my sentence.
“Yes!”
“Yeah, I know of them. Why?” he asked.
“I need their numbers or one of their numbers,” I said quickly. “Do you know anyone who would have them?”
He was silent for a moment. “Judd might have O’s number, I know they have fucked before.”
“Can you please ask him for it?” I said, realizing I was sounding absurd. “Something bad is going to happen, and I need to speak to them, please.”
“Ok, let me call him and see if he answers. I think he might still be at the club,” he said.
“Yes please! Thank you, Mason.”
“Call you back.” He hung up and I sent a thank you to the goddess for giving me such a great friend who didn’t ask questions.
