My heart warmed as I shook my head, watching him be so gentle with the cats like they were his own, forgetting that Ezra didn’t grow up with animals or anything that was really his. It was nice to see him be able to enjoy the small things and a little part of me felt guilty for not making him have more experiences like this.
I rolled my eyes at myself. I was becoming too soft.
It was two in the morning when we called it quits. We were both getting anxious that she hadn’t returned and a quick pass by Valentine Town would make us feel better, knowing she was somewhere safe. Valentine Town was bustling since it was the weekend. We rolled past the customer parking lot going straight for the employee lot. Even though we weren’t allowed to go in, we would just pass by to look for her death trap.
Ezra tapped my arm just as we got to the employee parking.
Senator Cox. He signed.
I stopped the car and followed his pointed finger, seeing the Senator get into a car.
“Seems like a coincidence we just heard his name and he’s here in town?” I put the car in reverse, ready to follow him.
Ezra tapped on my shoulder again.
Xiomara?
She has to be here,” I said watching the big Tahoe drive away. “If you had just left the tracking device on her car, we would know exactly where she was at.”
I didn’t mean to sound so cruel, but seeing the Senator put me on edge.
Ezra scowled. I felt bad; it felt like lying to her.
“Well, next time we see her I want that damn device back in her car,” I snapped, following the Tahoe. “If she needs to be mad at someone, she can be mad at me.”
Ezra stayed silent as I followed the Senator, keeping my distance because we needed this. Saint was already getting nervous at our lack of information. When it was certain he was going to the next town over, I slowed down and saw them park at the only swanky hotel in the area. I was surprised he had a room booked there, when he could’ve booked a night at Valentine Town, but this made our job easier and allowed us to step on less toes.
Why here? Ezra signed.
I don’t know, but it makes things easier.” I parked the car a safe distance away. “You think we could catch and grab one of his men?”
It would be easier to just go for Cox. He signed.
“We can’t do that,” I sighed, knowing it would be easier, but we had to be delicate.
Saint didn’t want a sloppy job, especially when politics were at play.
“I want you to come back and do surveillance while I make a plan,” I said, putting the car in drive. “I want to talk to Saint and run a few things by him, now that we know he’s here. I also need you to bring your laptop and see if you can break into the files Mars gave us. I know you tried, but I feel like those are crucial, now that we know Cox is here. He’s the key to everything.”
Ezra nodded as I drove back to our house.
Can we pass by her house?
We didn’t have time for it, but it would ease my discomfort and put us at ease.
“Yeah, and if you have a tracking device on you, we are putting it on her car,” I snapped.
He pulled out a device from his jacket, putting it on the dashboard.
“Good. We could just plant one on her too,” I smirked, seeing his head shake vigorously.
That would be dick and I won’t put it on unless she allows us. I doubt she is going to do that. He signed.
“It would make things so much easier for us,” I said, passing Valentine Town.
It’s an invasion of privacy and that’s her body. He signed furiously. Can’t we just ask for her phone number?
I scowled. Phone numbers meant we were sticking around, and we would talk to each other. That sounded awful.
