“A girl,” I said, attempting to be vague, hoping he was focused on me and Ezra.
“You brought a girl here on a date?” he smirked.
“More like she dragged us,” I said.
“She has good taste,” he said, finally looking at me. “Should I worry about you and Ezra?”
“No, while we have her with us, we are strictly off the clock,” I said, watching Ezra and Xiomara walking into the house.
Not having them in my line of sight made me nervous. I hated not being able to see them.
“I never thought I would see the day Ezra would settle down,” he said, pulling out his phone.
“It’s just fun while we are in the area,” I said, but the words tasted like ash as I said them.
“Do they know that?” He started looking around again.
“It doesn’t matter. After we finish what we need to do, we are leaving whether or not they like it,” I said, checking my phone, itching to see if they were ok.
“Sometimes you don’t get a choice,” he said softly.
“Is that the way it was with you and Boogie?” I asked.
It was no secret the men who ran Halloween town were in a relationship together.
“Exactly,” he grinned. “And it looks like you might not either.”
I rolled my eyes. “That’s not what’s happening here.”
“Sure, keep telling yourself that,” he chuckled. “Don’t start any trouble or else I’ll have to let Madame Red know one of her girls was here.”
I clenched my jaw, hoping he didn’t know about Xiomara.
“They wanted to go shopping before we left and we will be out of your hair,” I said, attempting to sound composed.
“Good,” he said, nodding to someone I couldn’t see. “Then, have fun.”
“Wait,” I said before he left. “I need info about someone. We might have a lead on who kidnapped Saints’ wife and lover. How much would it cost me?”
“We aren’t that kind of town,” he said. “You should know that is not our expertise.”
“Well, I can't really ask who I need to ask,” I said, trying to be discreet, hoping he caught my drift.
He studied me for a moment, pulling out his phone to call someone.
“Mars, I need you to call Oliver tomorrow and help him with whatever he needs,” he said, nodding, and closing his phone.
“Expect a call tomorrow afternoon,” he said. “And I’ll cash it in for a favor at a time of my choosing. It will most likely be from Ezra or maybe Saint.”
“Whatever you need within reason,” I said. “And I will pay the debt. I think Saint owes you enough.”
“Fair enough,” he said, holding his hand out.
We shook hands. “Thank you.”
“I hope you find the bastard. Have a spooky night! Tell Z I said hi,” he yelled, walking away as Ezra and Xiomara came out of the haunted house, laughing.
They looked so carefree; it eased the tension I had been holding onto. He said we wouldn’t be harmed, but that didn’t mean shit. He could go back on his word, and I didn’t want to find out.
