“Does it hurt?” I wiggle my brows. “Do I need to relieve you?”

He growls. “You’re making it worse.”

I bite my tongue before I say one of the gazillion things I’d love to tease him with.

“You’re coming to family day this week.”

“I am?”

“Yep. And I’m taking you out on a date Friday night.”

“Can we steal a raccoon?”

He sighs. “No.”

My shoulders fall. “Boring.”

“It won’t be boring when I take you home.”

I shiver at the promise in his voice. “Okay. Family day and a date.”

He kisses my nose. “I need to get back to practice.”

“And I need to teach your kid to surf.”

He drops his arms from around me and I immediately miss his warmth. It doesn’t matter how hot the weather is. I want him keeping me warm. The man I love but can’t keep. Not after he learns the truth.

I need to tell him I can’t give him children. And I will. Soon. I promise.

Coach Knox blows the whistle. “Line up!”

“I bet I can push the sled the furthest,” Tanner says.

I grunt. No way. This is a blocking sled. Not a push sled. He has no idea what he’s doing. I don’t even know why he’s doing this exercise.

Tanner gets ready and Knox yells, “Hit!”

The sled barely moves six inches. Everyone laughs.

“It’s harder than it looks,” Tanner says.

I ignore him and get in place.

“Hit!”

I explode forward. My shoulders square. My hands inside. My legs churning until the sled groans backward across the grass until I’m halfway across the field.

I hear cheering and glance at the stands. May is clapping and shouting while wearing one of my jerseys. Her parents and Jace are sitting next to her. This is my family. The one I want to create and hopefully grow someday.

“Porter!”

I jerk my attention back to the drill.
