Roman walked to her and took her in his arms. “Who, baby?”
“Evan told me he’s the one that shot Rick. He said Rick found out he was doing things illegally and was going to turn him in.”
“Oh, God damn, baby. I’m so sorry.”
She nodded and tightened her grip on him. “I am, too.”
“We’ll get the gun tested for that. I can guarantee he’s going away for a long time.”
“Good.”
Beth called Sandra and told her they were coming to get her son and about what happened.
“Oh, my God. That bastard,” Sandra hissed.
“I know. We’re going to have to deal with a lot of stuff to get through this.”
“Yes, but you’ve got all of us, Roman, and Jayden. You’ll get through it.”
“I know.”
“Do you want me to keep Jayden for the night?” Sandra asked.
“No. He needs to know what’s going on, and I know he’s probably worried.”
“He is. I’ll drop him off. Are you at the house?”
Beth pressed her fingers against her eyes because they ached from crying so much. “No, we’re going to stay at Roman’s tonight. The house is still considered a crime scene.”
“Just relax. I’ll be there soon. I’ll make sure he gets in the elevator. Call me later if there’s anything I can do.”
“Thank you. You’re a godsend,” Beth told her.
“You’d do the same for me.”
Beth hung up, walked to the window, and stared out at the sky and traffic driving by below them. She wrapped her arms around her waist and sighed.
She heard Roman in the kitchen talking on his phone but couldn’t hear the words.
She was startled when arms wrapped around her.
“How are you doing?”
She leaned back against him and closed her eyes. “I’m good. Sandra is bringing Jayden here, so we don’t have to go get him.”
“Good. I’ll call out for some pizza.”
She nodded.
“I’m going to be watching to see if you eat.”
She looked over her shoulder at him. “I don’t know if I can.”
“Even if it’s one piece. Did you have any lunch?”
She shook her head.
“Then you definitely have to, baby. You need to keep your strength up.”
