She felt bile start to crawl up her throat. “You’re the one that shot him?”

She watched him grin. How could he be proud of himself?

“Yeah. The night he threatened me, we had a domestic call. We calmed the couple down and were starting to leave. We got to the parking lot, and I pulled out my extra gun and shot him.”

A sob caught in her throat. “Oh, my God. You killed your partner and friend over some money?” One thing that stood out in her head was he would have to kill her. He wouldn’t want her to tell anyone about his confession. Images of Jayden and Roman flashed through her mind.

“It was a lot of fucking money.”

She swallowed back her fear. “What do you want me to do?”

“I don’t fucking know,” he screamed as he started to pace again.

Beth took some deep breaths to try to stay calm because she knew he was very close to losing it. She had to think. She looked around the basement for a weapon but didn’t see anything she could use. She didn’t want this to be the end of her life. She had too much to live for.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Roman threw his pen down when his phone beeped. Evan was in the basement looking for his money and drugs, but he wouldn’t do anything about it. He had to wait until the D.A. got back to him. At that moment, they had no grounds for arrest.

“Aiden, he’s there again. Can you get audio going? I want to tape everything I can. I was waiting for the D.A. before we pick him up, but he’s going a little nuts because he knows all his things are gone.”

“It tapes automatically when the sensors are triggered.”

“Good. When this goes down, I’m going to need you to videotape as much as you can. I don’t want the system to fail us on this.”

“You got it, sir.”

Roman watched as Evan kicked at the wall and threw what he could find across the room after finding his hidey hole empty.

Roman grinned. “You fucking bastard. I can’t wait to take you down.”

Evan paced for a minute and then ran upstairs.

Roman set his phone down and got back to work.

Not ten minutes later, the phone buzzed again. Roman’s smile fell, and his heart stopped as Evan dragged Beth down the steps. He stood abruptly and raced into the main room and out the back door to his car. “What the hell is she doing there?” he asked himself before he dialed his phone.

“I need you, Conner and Dylan, with me now, out by my car.”

Roman had just walked up to his car when the other men ran out of the building.

“One of you call Aiden and tell him to meet us at Beth’s. I need the other to drive. No sirens.”

“What’s going on?” Dylan asked as he started the car.

“Evan is there with Beth. He’s being rough with her, and I can see it going downhill fast. It looks like he might be high on something.”

“Damn.” Dylan flashed his lights and took some corners fast, getting them there in half the time. He parked the car a bit down the road from Beth’s house.

They sprang from the car and raced to the side of the house.

“How do you want this to go, boss?” Conner asked.

“I’m going to go in. I need you guys to find cover, but you have a good shot at him if he comes out of the doors. One in front and the other in the back.”

“Where do you want Aiden when he gets here?” Conner whispered.

“I want him out of the line of fire and to concentrate on getting whatever he can on video. We’re getting a video of what’s going on in the basement right now.”
