Roy stopped suddenly at a look from his mother.

Roy cleared his throat. “I meant she’s a very nice girl.”

Theresa snorted, and the other men gagged.

Beth laughed. “Sandra, I’d like you to meet Roman’s mom, Theresa, and these are two of his brothers, Roy and Tysen.”

Sandra shook everyone’s hands. “It’s very nice to meet you.”

Roman caught Sandra’s gaze and tipped his head toward Tysen and then mouthed the single one.

Sandra started laughing.

Tysen snorted. “You’re about as subtle as a bull.”

Sandra curled her arm through Tysen’s and started pulling him away. “Let’s talk.”

Roman heard his brother laugh.

“Do you have any kids?” Sandra asked.

“No.”

“I’d want a few eventually,” Sandra said.

Tysen sputtered. “I can do that.”

The small group watched them walk off, but they were getting too far away to hear what they were talking about.

“Yeah, they’re perfect for each other,” Roy said.

Roman agreed. Sandra would be much better for him than Maggie ever had been.

They turned back to the children. After a minute, they sat back down to watch on the bleachers that were in the shade.

Roman sat behind Beth with her between his legs. He had a hold of one of her hands and played with her fingers as they talked and watched.

“The children will remember this their whole life,” Theresa said and smiled.

Beth turned to her. “I think Tristian, Emma, and Kara would do well with riding lessons. It wouldn’t cost them anything, and they could come out at the same time.”

“I think it’s a great idea, but I’ll have to talk to the wife,” Roy said.

His mom slapped his knee. “You’re a smart man.”

“I’m also your favorite.”

“You are not. I am. Mom even told me so,” Roman barked.

“She would never do that.”

Theresa rolled her eyes and shook her head. She turned to Beth and whispered. “Ignore them, dear. They’re all a little delusional.”

Beth barked out a laugh.

“What did she say?” Roman asked Beth.

She shook her head. “Nothing,” she said and smirked.
