“Damn, I wish we could save them all.”
“I do, too.” Fuller sighed in disgust. “You know how it is.”
Roman nodded. The lack of funding and places to put the girls were major factors that kept them from helping every one of them.
“They are starting to load them now. The interpreter, who’s fucking hot, by the way, was a tremendous help. We want to hire her.”
Roman shook his head. “No way in hell.”
“How about put in a good word for me?”
Roman grinned. “Forget it. She’s taken.”
“Oh, yeah.” The agent studied him. “It’s you?”
Roman shrugged.
“Damn.” The agent stood. “I’m still going to try to recruit her.”
“Be my guest, but it won’t happen.” Roman snorted and stood. “I’ll go down with you.”
“You should meet the ones in charge of ICE and BP.”
“That’s what I was thinking.” He wasn’t going to say he was a little nervous having her down there with a lot of guys because he knew they were all imagining her in bed with them, and he wanted to put a stop to it.
He heard Beth in the underground parking lot. When he found her, she was helping the last girl into a large van. Luckily, the feds had a female interpreter with them so the girls would have a voice and someone to keep them calm.
Roman looked around and grunted. More guys were staring at Beth than actually working, and he was going to put a stop to it. He couldn’t believe how much jealousy was eating at him. He’d never been the possessive type.
“Beth, come here, please.”
He was pleased when she instantly came to stand in front of him and didn’t even flinch when he grasped her shoulder. “How are you holding up?” he whispered to her.
She nodded, but he could tell it had taken its toll.
“How about a hug, sweetheart?”
She smiled, walked into his arms, and sighed as he held her tightly against his chest.
“I’ll take you home.”
She shook her head. “I’ve got my car.”
“You look worn out.”
“I’ve been worse. I have to pick up Jayden from a neighbor.”
“Do you have anything inside the building?”
“No,” she said and shook her head.
“Let me get you to your car. There’s nothing else you can do here.”
She nodded and started walking to a four-door, white Lexus.
“Nice car.”
“Yeah. It was my late husband’s grandmother’s. She gave him the car and the house.”
