“We should really discuss what happened tonight with Penny.” Cameron gestures to the door. “You and I can finish our talk and have our statement ready to go to the press in the morning.”
My father’s eyes narrow on Cameron. He’s being very obvious about getting between my father and Jennifer. But who is he protecting?
“Excuse me?”
We all turn and see a man in his early twenties standing in the doorway. He’s a nice-looking guy and well-dressed.
“Sorry, but I was told Penny Wright is in this room.” His gaze passes over the adults in the room and settles on me. He flashes an FBI badge. “I need to get your statement.”
“I’m her lawyer, Cameron Jacobs. This is her father, William Foster.” Cameron takes over the introductions.
Jennifer touches my shoulder briefly to get my attention. “If you need anything, call Harper. I’ll make sure she texts you my number. If he gives you any grief at all...”
Her gaze falls on my father, but I’m going to be okay.
“I’ll be fine but thank you.” I’ll be the child William Foster always wanted, so my brother can have his own life.
She nods and leaves the room. I return to the chair, and William stands beside me with his cold hand on my shoulder. I tense beneath his touch, but don’t brush him off. Cameron sits beside me and nods to the agent.
“I’m James Perkins. I know you’ve been through a lot, but it’s best for us to get what you remember tonight and then we’ll talk again to see if you recall anything else later.” He holds out his phone and presses record on it. “This is James Perkins interviewing Penny Wright. She’s accompanied by her father William Foster and Cameron Jacobs, who is her attorney. Can you confirm that you are Penny Wright?”
“Yes.”
He nods. “Can you tell me what you remember about tonight?”
“We’ll come down to your task office this week and give a formal statement.” Cameron offers James his hand.
“I’m confident we’ll get this handled without it coming to a trial for Penny.” James gives me a broad smile. “You were under duress and helping your friends.”
I nod and keep my mouth shut. Because part of me wishes I’d finished the job and that instead of trying to avoid an attempted murder charge, I was trying to avoid going to jail for murder or involuntary manslaughter.
James leaves the room after a few words with my father. William looks at Cameron.
“I’m glad you were able to come.” William shakes Cameron’s hand.
“Of course. I’ll do whatever I can to protect these teens.” Cameron turns to me and holds out a card. His dark eyes hold mine. “Anything you need, you call me.”
I nod and slide his card into the pocket of my scrubs. I don’t have my phone or anything else. It’s all being reviewed by the team.
“I’ll make sure Luke gets you a phone before he leaves.” William puts his hands in his pockets, but he still doesn’t manage to look casual. “If you need anything...”
He trails off.
“I’ll be home tomorrow.” I need to get my stuff from Caden’s house still.
He nods and leaves. Cameron gives me a smile before falling in step with me on the way to Will’s room, which is not far at all. He knocks and pushes the door open.
Will blinks a couple times before realizing it’s me. His smile is so welcoming and relieved that my heart skips a beat, and I smile back.
Before I step into the room, Cameron glances to make sure my father is gone before he says, “I don’t know what type of relationship you have with your father, but I mean it, if you need anything at all, you can call me. Or tell one of the guys and they can ask me to help.”
I give him a polite smile. “I know what I’m doing. But I appreciate it.”
He studies me for a moment and then nods and turns to leave. I drag in a breath and release it. I’m more than willing to step into the dragon’s den because I have armor now.
The door closes softly behind me as I walk over to Will’s bedside.
“Hey.” He scoots over in the bed.
