“No movement on either party.” Luke’s voice is low. He and the other horsemen have been crashing at Jack’s with Harper. Luke offered for me to come crash too, but Dad’s security system is top-notch. “You still good there?”

I nod, but then realize he can’t see me. “Yes. All is good. Will was over. We had dinner tonight with Dad, and there was no accidental drugging. Dad thinks Will is a great asset.”

I roll my eyes at the word, but Luke chuckles.

“At least he likes your boyfriend and isn’t trying to hook you up with someone else.”

There is that. Besides, Will knows the game and is just as determined for me to win it. I don’t fully understand the deal with Harper and my dad, but I’m sure if I need to be read into the situation, Luke will let me know.

A loud thump rings through the quiet house. Dad is in his office, but that didn’t sound like a noise he’d make.

“Luke,” I whisper. “Stay on the line.”

“What’s going on? Do I need to be there?” It sounds like Luke’s already moving, opening and closing doors.

After a second, he says to someone, “Check the cameras at my father’s.”

Luke told me about the cameras he had installed in our father’s house. Seems fair given how much surveillance our dad has on us. But Luke wanted me to feel safe and also know where not to have sex with my boyfriend. Which I’m grateful for.

I hear murmuring on Luke’s end of the call.

“Fuck,” he says. “Penny, get out of there.”

I freeze with my hand on the railing. “What?”

“Get out. Someone’s in the house.”

“I’m upstairs,” I whisper. My heart beats so loud in my ears. Panic floods me.

“Go to your room. Lock the door. We’ll be there.”

I know enough to not try to be a hero. If it comes down to it, the advice is to always do what you can to escape. So I do as Luke says, staying on the line with him. With the door locked, I look down at the phone and quickly text Will.

Me:

Someone’s in the house

Will:

Be there as quick as I can

Me:

Luke is coming

Will:

I’ll wait for them outside

You somewhere safe

Me:

Yes, my room

Will:

Good
