“I know I’m not your mother or anything, but can I give you a little advice?” When Leah nodded, she said, “Every couple gets in arguments from time to time. It’s what you do after those disagreements that matters most.”
“Are you saying I should call him?”
“That’s up to you.” Tracy finished her coffee and got up to take the cup to the sink. “It’s just that you look like you lost your best friend. Thank goodness for the wedding tomorrow. It’ll be a good distraction for you.”
“Wedding?” She didn’t know what Tracy was talking about.
“It’s Candi and Michael’s big day. I heard you were invited.”
As they walked toward the door, Leah recalled being invited when they’d gotten the pups all together at Michael’s place. She hadn’t intended to go, but maybe Tracy was right. Maybe getting out and being around people would help distract her. Plus, Jane was back from her trip and able to watch over the inn.
“I’ll see you there.”
“Why don’t we pick you up?” Tracy stopped in the foyer and turned to her. “Then we don’t have to worry about saving seats or anything.”
Leah didn’t see any harm in that. Then she realized she didn’t have anything to wear. “What is everyone wearing? I ask because most of my clothes are still in California. All I have is a little black dress.”
The mention of the dress made her think of Shaun. She’d worn it on their date. The memory made her miss him all the more.
“That sounds perfect.” Tracy sent her a reassuring smile.
“Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow. At what time?”
“The wedding is at two. So we’ll pick you up at one-thirty. It’ll give us plenty of time to get there and find some seats.” Then Tracy leaned forward and gave her a hug.
After Tracy was gone, Leah wondered if she’d made the right decision to go to the wedding. It wasn’t like she was in a celebrating mood.
The truth was that she was having regrets about making Shaun leave. He hadn’t lied to her about being married—Mandi had done that. And after meeting his ex, she could see why he wasn’t anxious to mention her.
Mochi ran up to her with a little whine that said she had to go outside. And then Leah realized she’d see Shaun when he came to pick up his dog. He definitely wouldn’t leave town without Mochi. It would give her a chance to apologize for throwing him out.
As she took Mochi outside, she thought about the wedding. Shaun’s father was supposed to walk the bride down the aisle, did that mean Shaun would attend the wedding too?
Suddenly, she realized her little black dress wouldn’t be appropriate at all. She had to make a trip into town. Hopefully, Frills & Heels would have something for her.
Chapter Twenty-Six
Would he be there?
The following day, Leah had asked herself that question reportedly. She didn’t know the answer. She hadn’t worked up the courage to message him to ask.
With the inn in good hands with Jane, Leah had taken her time getting ready to attend. She’d even bought some nail polish to match her dress. It’d been a while since she’d gone out of her way to look good.
When she was finished getting ready, she stepped in front of Mochi. “What do you think?
“Woof. Woof.”
Leah smiled. “Thank you. Now let’s get you outside one last time before I go.”
They hurried out the door. Mochi didn’t seem to mind that Leah stood on the sidewalk while Mochi tromped around in the snow. Just as Mochi finished her business, a car pulled into the driveway. Leah glanced over to see Tracy in the driver’s seat. Leah waved before taking Mochi into the cottage.
After getting the pup situated, she headed out the door. Her stomach was a ball of nerves.
When she got into the car, she said hello to her brothers, who were in the backseat. When she turned to Tracy, she said, “Thanks for picking me up. Isn’t Paul going to the wedding?”
“Uh, he had to finish something. He said he’d catch up with us at the church.”
“Oh. Okay.” She was disappointed not to see her father and have a chance to talk to him before the ceremony. But they would have time at the reception.
