“Okay, so what's the curse?”

Clarissa hesitates.

“Apparently, their Devils need a particular mate.”

I stare at her.

“A mate?”

“A promised mate.”

My heart gives one enormous thump.

No. Nope.

Chapter 14

Belinda

“Wow. That’s ridiculous.”

“Belinda, you live in a haunted bed-and-breakfast with vegetarian vampire bats.”

“Those are completely unrelated.”

She gives me a look.

“Continue.”

“The stories say every Leeds Devil has one promised mate. A person capable of balancing him. Calming the Devil. Keeping the darkness from consuming him.”

My stomach drops.

For the first time in years, I am completely fucking present.

Damian hadn't said that.

But last night...

Something had changed in him. I felt it.

Every time we touched, his tension eased.

Even his wings had relaxed.

And my magic—golden sparks.

Magic I haven't been able to properly summon my entire life had answered him as naturally as breathing.

I swallow.

“What happens if they don't find this promised mate?”

Clarissa looks distinctly uncomfortable.

“That's the curse.”
