“You don't mean that.”
“I absolutely do.”
“You are a Ramos Witch.”
“Not anymore.”
The words leave my mouth before I think about them. And once they're out? They feel right.
Mother's face goes blank. Melida stares. Even Damian turns his head toward me.
I swallow. Then say it again. Slower.
“I am officially done being a Ramos.”
“Belinda.”
“My aunt left the family too, after she was tossed aside, didn't she?”
Mother says nothing.
“She left. She came here. She built a life that belonged to her.”
My eyes sting.
“And then she chose me.”
Mother's jaw tightens.
“She barely knew you.”
“Maybe she knew enough.”
The magic around my hands grows warmer.
“My inheritance isn't yours. The house isn't yours. The magical stores aren't yours. None of it belongs to Melida.”
I look directly at my sister.
“And you're not getting any of it.”
Her expression turns ugly.
“You selfish bitch.”
Damian growls. The sound is monstrous enough that Melida immediately steps backward.
His wings flare. I put my hand against his chest.
“I've got this.”
His gaze drops to me.
“Say the word, Sweet.”
Just an offer. My heart squeezes.
“I know.”
