“Well, it looks like your sister was in the will but didn’t stick to the stipulations,” Linc murmurs, and I frown.
“Why wasn't she told?” I ask, confused, and Linc hums.
Damn, it's weird how easy it is for me to call him his given name.
“Probably so she looked after you out of the goodness of her heart, but she failed, and I can guarantee she would have received the same letter, but without the number and explaining she failed,” he says, and I swallow hard as I put the letter down.
“Can you look after the card?” I ask, then mutter, “Why do I trust you?”
“Because I’m yours and you're mine and yes, I can keep hold of it, now open the birthday card, baby,” he murmurs, and I swallow again.
It’s weird how fast I trust him, how content I am with him doing this.
Taking a deep breath, I grab the card and lean back against Linc before opening it and tears fall as I see the ‘perfect daughter on her birthday,’ and Linc squeezes me tighter as I open my card.
“Our dearest miracle, Blair,
If you’re getting this card, then we’ve unfortunately left you, and for that, we are so sorry, sweetheart.
Daddy and I are hoping that you are happy and that you are not alone, that you’ve met someone, okay, I am, Daddy wants you to be single and alone…”
Linc snorts, and I grin despite my tears.
“I hope that you’ve got the job of your dreams and maybe even have a baby or a baby on the way. We hope you are living your best life and not letting your sister take over, and we really hope she’s treating you right.
I hope you’re happy, baby Blair. I’m so sorry we can’t celebrate this big milestone with you, but just know, we’re watching over you and love you something fierce.”
I sniffle, and Linc rests his chin on my shoulder and finishes reading for me, “Celebrate today with love and laughter, celebrate your life by ensuring it is full, and that you have the love that me and your daddy have.
We love you, our birthday girl,
Lots of love, Mama and Daddy.”
I shake my head as a sob leaves me, and Linc quickly puts the card on the table before holding me tightly, and I curl up into him.
“They loved you so fucking much, and if they had a choice, they wouldn’t have left you…” He whispers, and I grip his cut while he presses his nose to the top of my head and inhales.
God, my head is confused. I’m happy he’s here, but I’m also scared he’s going to hurt me, and then there is the whole El situation.
I go to move my face into the crook of his neck, not wanting to think, but a knock on my front door makes me pause, and he sighs, “I’ll get it,” before he gently moves me over to the other side of the couch, then kisses my forehead before going to the door as someone knocks louder, and I tense because I know exactly who it is.
“Can I help you?” Linc asks curtly before I hear my sister demand, “Who are you?”
“I’m Blair's old man, who are you?!” he snaps back, and my heart races at him claiming me to my sister.
“I'm Poppy Newton. Now, if you can move aside, I need to speak to my sister about a letter I got from our parents' lawyer that has nothing to do with you,” she snaps before I hear the door bang, yet she doesn’t come inside, instead, she gasps.
“So, you’re not here to wish your sister a happy birthday then?” Linc growls, and I turn my head to see him tense, “Instead, you care about half the money you didn’t get because you refused to take in your sister when she was a kid?”
“How dare you –”
Linc cuts her off, “Nah, you can fuck off and right now, especially before your pompous husband gets out of the car, because if he comes near me, I’ll fuck him up because I know exactly what he did to my girl! Don’t come back!”
Linc slams the door, then locks it, and my sister screeches in anger. Linc ignores her and walks around the couch. Just when I think he’s going to sit next to me, he instead grabs my legs then yanks me down, and I squeal out a giggle, making him grin before he lies between my legs, which of course have parted for him.
He presses his lips against mine as he grinds himself on me, his hardness clear as day, before he murmurs, “Food then bed, or bed then food in a bit? It’s up to you, birthday girl?”
Oh wow, he wants to distract me.
