“What’s it gonna be, gorgeous? Hmm? To the dome or to the back of the head?” he asked, waving the gun in my face.
“Fuck you.” I seethed just as Kobalt delivered a hard kick to his head.
The man was caught off guard and immediately fell over. The gun fell to the ground and went off, but the bullet only hit a tree. He didn’t have the chance to recover because Kobalt was on his ass. I scrambled toward the gun and grabbed it just in case he got the upper hand on Kobalt.
“Who the fuck sent you?” Kobalt demanded, raining harsh blows on the man’s head and face.
It sounded like he was beating a pound of meat with a meat mallet with every blow he delivered. Kobalt repeated the same question at least seven times without deviating. His hands were fast and brutal, creating destruction to the man’s face in a very short time.
Through mangled lips, we finally heard the man mumble, “Norrell.”
Kobalt stood and grabbed the gun from me.
“You brought your bitch ass to my property and tried to hurt my woman. For that, you don’t get a choice.” He shot the man between the eyes.
I yelped and jumped. The action, while it shouldn’t have been surprising, startled me. Kobalt hadn’t thought twice about his actions, and everything I witnessed was far more brutal than any of his fights I had watched before.
The cry that wrangled from my throat didn’t sound like my voice, and it broke down into choked sobs. Kobalt lifted me into his arms and held me close. He soothed me, raining kisses all over my face. He walked away from the man and carried me back to his truck at the edge of the tree line. The entire walk, he spoke soothing words like: “You’re safe now,” “I gotcha, baby,” and “I swear that I’ll never let anything happen to you.”
By the time we arrived at his truck, he rained kisses all over my face and held me until I stopped sobbing. Tears still streamed from my eyes, and I still trembled with an icy chill, but I was no longer audibly sobbing.
On the drive back to the house, he dialed Royal King. Royal’s voice rang out over the truck’s Bluetooth system.
“Aye, big homie. Everything good?”
“Fuck nah. One of them bitch ass niggas from your crew invaded my property and tried to kill Kaimera.”
“The fuck you say to me?”
“You heard me.”
“Nah, man. C’mon. Don’t tell me no shit like that. Who was it?”
“That nigga you called Jax.”
“I hope you put his bitch ass down like a dead dog.”
“Not even that much compassion.”
“That nigga wasn’t one of my men. He was someone we picked up on Jaziel’s word.”
“Wait. As in Jaziel Jones?”
My attention jerked from my sorrow to Royal’s words. I felt Kobalt tense beside me.
“Yeah. You know he works for my crew on the weekends.”
My eyes flew to Kobalt as he pulled up in front of the farmhouse.
“My cousin recommended him?” I asked in a broken voice.
“Sounds like,” Kobalt answered. He shut the car off and grabbed his phone. “Stay right here for a few seconds.”
He hopped out of the car and walked a few feet away, but his phone was still on speaker so I could hear their conversation.
“Royal, I need a cleaner. Can you put me in touch with Frost?”
“It’s already taken care of. I just got off the phone with my cousin, and it’s in the works,” Royal replied.
