“Hello?” he answered groggily.

I rolled my eyes. Did anyone in this city wake up before 8 a.m.?

“Anton. Wake up,” I said sternly.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, immediately concerned.

“I need your help. Sarah might be in trouble.”

“What? What kind of trouble?”

“Angela is on some sort of warpath,” I said. “I’m scared of what she might do.”

I explained to him all about last night’s gala and the scene she caused, driving Sarah away with her lies. I went on to tell him about how Angela had pulled a fast one on security and had ransacked my office for Sarah’s information this morning.

“Jesus Christ,” he breathed. “I knew Angela was a little cuckoo, but this is next level.”

“I know. She also left a troubling note on my car. She’s going to do something to Sarah.”

“What do you need me to do?”

“I need you to head to the office, just in case Sarah shows up there. If she does, keep her there. Take her to security and keep her safe. If you see my father, keep this quiet.”

“Okay,” he said. “And what are you going to do?”

“I’m on my way to her apartment in Brooklyn. I need to get to her before Angela does something reckless.”

I ended the call just as I reached the Brooklyn Bridge. I could see the boroughs coming into view, slight relief washing over me. I was almost there. I was almost to Sarah. I just hoped I would get to her before my psychotic ex did.

Chapter 33 Sarah

“It’s Brad,” I said shakily, holding up my phone for Brittany to read his text message.

The words flashed through my mind like a red neon sign. You’re in danger.

“What does that mean?” asked Brittany frantically, reading it over again.

“How does he know?” I asked, my brows pulling together.

Then the pieces began to fall into place, one by one. The gala. Angela’s cruel words and calculated smile. Of course, it was her. I just hadn’t realized we had come this far as to resort to threats.

To danger.

“Angela…” I breathed out.

“His ex?” Brittany raised her brows high on her head.

“It’s the only person I can think of.”

“But if they’re happily together then why is she coming after you?”

I shook my head, feeling lightheaded. I shakily walked to the couch and collapsed onto it, placing my head between my knees. A woozy feeling crept over me.

“Hey, hey,” said Brittany worriedly, sitting beside me. “Are you okay?”

I nodded as I looked down at the floor, though I felt far from okay. Everything in my life felt like it had turned upside down, topsy turvy. Just yesterday I found out I was pregnant, and then I lost the man I thought I loved. The father of my baby.

I wondered if I had ever had him to lose to begin with, or if he was always intending on getting back together with his ex. She was part of his world. More so than I would ever be. That much was made clear last night when I showed up to the fanciest party I had ever seen or imagined, wearing a dress that was nicer than I ever envisioned for my own wedding. I was an outcast in a roomful of wealthy strangers who didn’t have the time of day for me. That included Brad, who had left me to fend for myself among the wolves. Left me to face the one wolf who was more dangerous than them all.
