“Yes, ma. I understand. But I’m about to go work out with my trainer, so I gotta go.”

He hung up on her while she was still talking, and I couldn’t blame him.

“She hollin’ ‘bout you just trying to buy my love. That lady is delusional.”

“Just like ya daddy,” I added.

“You right,” he snickered.

“Is Xain really coming over to work out with you today?”

“Yeah, he’s already on his way over there.”

“Oh, okay.”

Inside, I was beaming, happy that Noah and Xain hit it off. If my brothers didn’t like you, I definitely couldn’t do anything with you.

A text from Amill came through. Usually, we were always in the group chat, but James’ condition still hadn’t improved, and Jameera was going through it. I read the text from the notification screen.

Amill: That nigga is OBSESSED.

An image was attached, and I regrettably opened it while waiting at a red light.

Montell’s annoying ass was on his Close Friends, showing he was, in fact, not moving on after all of these years. This motha fucka zoomed in on pictures of Q leaving the courthouse, with me holding Xain’s hand in the background. Even the people we arrived and left with didn’t notice the brief gesture when things got a little crazy out there.

Amill: Are you still in his Close Friends? He posted like three videos. Basically called you a bum bitch that’s fucking the help. His words, not mine.

Me: I hate that nigga. Like, move on lame ass bitch.

Amill: I’m just gagged that Xain was the nigga in your no face no case pictures. I guess it’s better than y’all beefing. You were even glowing when you got out of jail. I know he was hitting it right in Morocco.

I grinned like someone handed me a million dollars tax-free. Amill couldn’t fathom how right she was.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Xain

Pulling in front of Khaleesi’s building, I spotted Noah walking out of the lobby right on time. He carried a backpack and had a pair of headphones over his ears. I finally had some downtime to make good on my weekly workouts with Noah.

“Wassup,” he dapped me up after slipping into the car.

“Shit, chilling. You ain’t been running your sister crazy, have you?”

“Nah. Why? What she tell you?”

“Nothing, honestly.”

“Oh, I was about to say,” Noah laughed. “I gotta send y’all my game schedule for my AAU team. You think you can make a few games?”

“I’mma pull up to every game I can; just send me the schedule,” I confirmed.

We drove twenty minutes to the gym and headed inside. I started Noah his own membership just in case he ever wanted to hit the gym without me. Surprisingly, I was enjoying working with Noah more than I ever imagined. I didn’t know if it was because the lil nigga was funny, or if I genuinely enjoyed the craft. We already warmed up and moved on to some single-leg squats to a bench as he counted off.

“One… two… three…” Noah counted.

“Slow down just a little and make sure your knees stay over your toes,” I suggested after watching his knees and ankles.

Noah adjusted and corrected himself for the last five.
