“I just landed,” I tell her. “I’m looking at what you sent.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

“I ran into her on the way out. We said hello. Cam was waiting by the car. I left with him.”

A door closes on her end.

“You didn’t know she was there?”

“No. She’s on tour. I didn’t even know she was in that city.”

I stand and take my bag down. Cam waits ahead of me, giving me what privacy he can. The woman in the picture had asked about Von. I congratulated her on the tour. She hugged me, and I went to the airport. I tell Giselle all of it. It sounds small because it was.

“I knew you were away for work,” she says. “I didn’t know about the hotel.”

“We met there. Another team flew people in. There’s no agreement, and they want the conversation kept private.”

“Another team.”

“Yeah.”

She says nothing for a moment. I move off the plane and stop beside a window while Cam goes ahead to make a call.

“I can explain more when I see you,” I tell her. “But you don’t have to wait until then to ask me about this woman. There’s nothing going on.”

“I believe you.”

Her voice shakes a little on the last word. I put my bag down.

“Where are you?”

“The hotel hallway. By an ice machine that has apparently never been emptied before.”

“Rae and Trina inside?”

“And Di. We were celebrating.”

“How was the show?”

She laughs without much amusement. “You want to talk about the play?”

“I want to know how your night was before this.”

“Good. It was good.” Her voice gets a little stronger. “She was so surprised.”

“You got pictures?”

“Yes.”

“Show me tomorrow.”

Cam looks back from the end of the corridor. I lift a finger to tell him I need another minute.

“What time are you getting home?” I ask her.

“After lunch. Why?”

“I want to come over.”
