“Couldn’t you have given it to me on the weekend? We were practically joined at the hip.”
“No, I couldn’t, so here I am. Still in bed I take it?”
Zane studied my pajamas, and even though I had a robe over my T-shirt and shorts, he somehow made me feel exposed. I felt my nipples harden in response.
“Why are you here at—” I glanced at the clock. “Holy shit, it’s 8 AM.”
“Late for work? I heard your boss is a real hard ass.”
“Funny. And yes, I like to get in early and put in a full day. I’ve so many parcels to send this morning. I’m behind now because a certain fiancé of mine hijacked my time.”
He shrugged. “We have a wedding to plan.”
“Yeah, well, I have a business to run. Is this going to take long?”
“No. In fact, it’s on the way to your store. I’ll give you a lift.”
“You can’t just buy my affection. You know that, right?”
“It’s called a gift, not a bribe. Now go change.”
“I’ll shower and change, then we can go.”
I made him wait. It was petty and stupid given the amount of work I had to do. But I waltzed into the living room forty-five minutes later having taken my sweet ass time.
“I thought you’d fallen back asleep.”
“Tempting, but no.”
It was only when Zane had parked and walked over to my store that confusion hit.
“What are we doing here, Zane?”
He took out a key, opening the shop.
“How the hell did you get a copy of my key?”
“Tilda.”
“That traitorous—” I’d given her a spare in case the one I’d given to my folks got lost.
“What you should be asking me is why do I have a copy. But now that we’re here, it might become clearer. Close your eyes.” He tugged me inside, shutting the door.
“Zane.” I looked at him, wary. “I hope you haven’t done something crazy.”
“Trust me.”
I don’t even know you. But as soon as the thought entered my brain, I knew that wasn’t entirely true. I did know him. Or was at least getting to know him more and more every day.
Sighing, I closed my eyes as he led me upstairs, a million thoughts racing through my overheated brain.
“You can open your eyes now.”
I blinked against the morning light, then gasped. “Oh my god!”
“You like it?”
I glanced around what had, up until Friday, been an empty shell. Somehow, Zane had managed to have it fully furnished. Not only that, the decor was exactly how I’d planned it in my discussion with Isabella. Soft creams with accents of pink and gold. The kitchen had appliances, the living area a sofa, TV, and coffee table . . . everything I needed.
