7 Minutes in Sea Haven

Rendered speechless for the second time in less than a minute, all I can do is gape at Graham. Do I have a spare?

“While you’re gone, Khaos will put the spare on and drive it to the tire shop to get it replaced.”

“Replaced?” Khaos and I question at the same time. I’ve only had to get a patch before.

Well, Guy did. But he told me about it.

Graham nods solemnly. “That’s the rule for blowouts this big.”

I sigh. What did I run over? Shouldn’t I have felt it?

“How much is a tire?”

“Two.”

“Two hundred dollars?”

“Two tires.”

“But—”

“Judging by your tread depth, they’re gonna make you replace two tires.” After a brief pause, Graham adds, “If not all four.”

So he does know about cars?

I throw Khaos a sideways glance. That muscle in his jaw ticcing again, he remains quiet, obviously as clueless about tread depth as I am.

I release yet another sigh.

“You’ll have to talk to my mom about payment.”

“This is your car, isn’t it?”

“Dad.” Khaos levels his father with a glare so lethal, I’m surprised Graham’s still standing.

“It is, yeah. Sorry,” I say, my cheeks heating. I’m spoiled even when I’m not trying to be. “Do you have any idea how much it would cost?”

“For a Lexus… At least a thousand.”

“I’ll pay for it,” Khaos offers.

“You don’t have that kind of money, son.”

They hold a silent stare-off that makes the hairs on the back of my neck rise.

“I’m not going to let you pay for my car.” I don’t know how much money Khaos has but it never seems to be enough.

Khaos glances at me. “I told you, I’ll do any—”

“I need to go,” I rush out to cover his next words before his dad hears them and puts two and two together. “It’s my car. I have the money. I’ll pay for it.” I still have all the earnings from tour I haven’t touched.

“Cash would be best,” Graham says, earning himself another death glare from his son.

“I don’t carry that kind of cash.”

“A check will do.”

“She doesn’t know how much it’ll be,” Khaos tells his dad through clenched teeth.
