So noble, I think crossly.
Asher hugs Felix tight and then leaves, ignoring Lorelei, who shouts for her to come back. Felix whirls, and our eyes connect. For a long moment, I think he sees me, but that’s ridiculous.
I back away from him, watching as he steps towards me, only to be intercepted by Clint McGowen.
“Lix, my love.”
Felix shoves him out of the way, but he’s caught by Jace.
“A match made in heaven,” Jace purrs.
I look between the three of them, watching as Zaire sees them, and his expression gets darker and darker.
“No,” he says, denying them.
I creep up to stand at his side, seeing the tremble in his hands and how hard he’s trying to hide how rough his breathing is.
I grip his hand, and we stare at the three of them.
They see me now.
All three of them.
“Who are you?” Clint asks, his eyes sparkling with curiosity.
I clear my throat and look up at Zaire. “Let's go. This was a mistake.”
“Khione,” Felix says my name in his deep voice, twisting it up and making it into something so much more than it is.
Holy smokes, the way he says my name has me wanting to peel off my clothes and lay down so he can eat off me.
I step closer to Zaire, hiding in his shadow.
“We’re a match,” Felix purrs.
“She’s not part of this,” Zaire snarls.
The words lash through me, harsh and unyielding, cruel in their honesty.
I’m not part of it. That’s right, this isn’t for me. I’m not…I don’t get a match.
I yank my hand free from him like I’ve been burned.
Zaire turns, “Key?”
I shake my head, tripping backwards, and then I whirl, vanishing with the crowd, ignoring the alpha calling my name and that stare, that intoxicatingly heavy stare of the omega who so tempts me.
Chapter 3
Felix
Icreep out of the back of their house and march up to the fence, glowering at it. It’s too tall for me to climb, still I throw myself at it and scrabble for a whole minute before I slide right off, landing on my ass in the grass. One stupid fence is separating me from my happily ever after. I stand up and pace the fence line, wondering if setting it on fire would make her like me or hate me.
I’m willing to risk it. For her.
I reach into my pocket and pull out the three stones I’ve been carrying on my person for months now. Valentine’s Day has a pink filigree heart. The Winter Solstice matchmaking event had a star, and now I have a pumpkin lantern smiling so evil-like.
A massive, hulking white monster moves towards me, his eyes reflecting blue. I scramble backwards, plastering myself against the fence that I have no hope of climbing. Is this my end? Is it over?
