Say it, June.
“I…” I can’t do this… but I have to. “I went to the doctor.”
Millie’s expression shifts from battle-ready to laser-focused.
“Okay,” she says carefully. “And?”
I shake my head once as though it might rewind time.
“They ran tests,” I whisper. “Because of the vomiting and the dizziness and all of it and…”
My throat closes.
Millie squeezes my shoulders.
“And?” she prompts gently.
I take one shaky breath.
“They said I’m pregnant.”
There.
It’s out.
The word hangs between us like a dropped glass.
Millie goes completely still.
“Pregnant,” she repeats.
I nod.
“Oh, my goodness,” she whispers. “Okay. Okay. Sit. Sit down.”
She ushers me into the back booth like I’m fragile cargo.
“How far?” she asks.
“Far enough that it could be any of them.”
“Oh, wow…”
We stare at each other.
Then we both start laughing. Which turns back into crying for me.
“I don’t know whether to faint or applaud you,” she says.
“I don’t need applause,” I say weakly. “I need a time machine.”
She grabs my hands across the table.
“Okay. Breathe.”
I try, but it comes out shakily.
“Okay,” she says, slipping into Practical Millie Mode. “First things first. How do you feel?”
