“How long since I last touched you?”

Mayhem glanced toward the clock. “Ten minutes?” Moon swore and put her palm flat against his chest. His wolf reached for hers immediately. The reaction was so strong that Moon sucked in a breath. Mayhem did too. The black lines stopped moving up his arm.

“Better?” she asked.

“Yeah,” he breathed.

“How much?” she asked.

“Feeling’s coming back,” he admitted. Moon closed her eyes. Damn it—she was becoming his medicine, and every time she stabilized him, she strengthened the very bond that might eventually transfer the night root into her. Mayhem covered her hand. “Hey.”

She opened her eyes. “Don’t.”

“Don’t what?” he asked.

“Make that face,” she said.

“What face?” he questioned.

“The one where you decide this is somehow your fault,” she said.

“It isn’t my fault,” he said.

“Good, I’m glad you see it that way,” Moon said.

“But it is my problem,” he insisted.

“Our problem,” she said. She could tell that he wanted to argue, but he didn’t. “That’s progress, at least.”

Chris cleared her throat, and Moon glanced back. Her VP was watching them. “What?”

“Nothing,” Chris whispered.

“You have that look,” Moon warned.

“What look?” Chris asked.

“The one where you’re about to say something annoying.”

Chris smiled. “You two are disgustingly cute.” Moon’s wolf practically preened, and Moon wanted to strangle it.

“Get out,” Moon growled. Chris laughed, and Mayhem grinned. Tempest shook her head, and Howler’s phone rang. His expression changed the moment he looked at the screen.

“Silverfang.” He answered. “Howler.” Moon felt like she was holding her breath, waiting for him to say something. His face hardened. “When?” Mayhem straightened, but Moon kept her hand against him. Howler walked away from the group. “How many?” There was another pause. “Anyone hurt?”

Moon’s stomach dropped as Howler ended the call. Mayhem asked first. “What happened?”

“One of our safe houses was hit,” Howler said.

Chrome’s expression went cold. “Where?”

“West side,” Howler said.

“Was it the Capitol Wolves?” Mayhem asked.

“Don’t know,” Howler admitted.

“How many brothers are down?” Chrome asked.
