“What about the man you saw?” Chris asked. “What was he doing?”

Moon paused, and Mayhem watched Chris notice. She waited Moon out while she decided if she wanted to share information about her vision anymore. “He was behind you.”

“That doesn’t answer the question,” Chris said.

“He wasn’t attacking you,” Moon almost whispered. Chris’s shoulders eased almost imperceptibly. “He was protecting you.”

Mayhem’s wolf stirred, which he found interesting. Chris folded her arms over her chest. “You sure?” Chris asked.

“Yes,” Moon breathed.

“And you couldn’t see his face?” Chris questioned.

“No,” Moon said.

“What about his scent?” Chris asked.

Moon frowned. “In a vision?”

“You smell things in them sometimes,” Chris reminded.

Mayhem looked at Moon. “You do?”

She shrugged. “Sometimes,” Moon said.

“Would have been useful information,” Mayhem grumbled.

“You didn’t ask.”

Chris snapped her fingers at them. “Focus.” Moon closed her eyes, and Mayhem watched her face. She wasn’t forcing the vision, just remembering it.

Finally, she said, “Pine.”

Chris frowned. “What else?” she asked.

Moon concentrated. “Smoke.”

Chris gasped. “Like campfire smoke?”

“I don’t think so,” Moon said.

“Bike exhaust?” Mayhem offered.

Moon shook her head. “Woodsmoke.” Chris went quiet. “And something metallic.”

“Blood?” Mayhem asked.

“No.” Moon looked troubled. “I don’t know.”

Chris nodded. “Okay.”

“That’s it?” Moon asked.

“What do you want me to do?” Chris asked.

“Stay here,” Moon said.

“Planning on it,” Chris grumbled.
