“Angel,” a thick Slavic accent, breaks the erotic trance I’m in. “My turn.”
My eyes slide over to Alex, who is sitting back watching the show, arms splayed across the back of the velvet lounge.
What the fuck? Is he for real?
My eyes flick to the Senator who has his hands full with Cherry and Imogen, both giggling, one in each ear, giving him the time of his life.
Raine—no, Angel—looks down and fucking winks at me, before sliding her body off mine and swaying over onto Alex. She climbs into his lap with lazy confidence, her latex dress creaking as she straddles his thighs backwards, placing her perfect, round ass onto his lap. His hands immediately go to her waist. His fingers dig in, possessive, too rough for my liking, as he encourages her to grind her ass into his lap.
I see fucking red.
Transported to a warzone, eyes locked the fuck in on an enemy.
My mind screams.
Kill him. You’ve done worse for less.
I calculate the distance, force, angle, all the things it takes to snap a man’s neck in under three seconds. I fantasize how it would feel to end the life of this maggot and promise myself I will end him. Maybe not tonight, but I will make him pay for touching her like this.
She rolls her hips in a smooth, practiced motion as she grinds him into a spin, while I sit here and pretend I’m not losing my fucking mind. His eyes flutter shut, while hers flick up to meet mine just for a heartbeat. And I can see the truth written on her face. She’s not into it; she’s hating every second of this. She’s enduring it for the assignment.
The knowledge doesn’t calm me. In fact, it makes it a million times worse. I’m not sure who I hate more—Alex, for touching her like that, or myself, for sitting here, letting it happen. What kind of man am I?
My hands ball into fists.
“Enjoying the show?” Carson asks, nudging me.
I peel my gaze from Raine and force a half-assed, drunk smile towards Carson.
“Lukas,” Carson says only to me. “This new business opportunity I have? I’ll talk about it more in Miami, but I want you to know I’m offering it to you first.”
“Weapons?”
Carson grins. “Something like that.”
I should push for more information, try to get Carson to reveal more. That’s what I should do. But all I can see is Alex’s dirty sweaty hands on Raine. He grins like he’s going to cut her up and keep her.
His hands start sliding higher towards her tits … No. Someone kick the chair and wake me up. I can’t watch this. I’m going to lose control and kill him. I know my rage, and it’s about one minute from exploding and compromising the entire mission. I need to leave.
Now.
I stand, knocking my drink over in the process.
“Lukas? You okay?” Carson asks.
“Yeah,” I say, wiping the liquid from the table onto the floor. “Sorry. Listen, Carson, I gotta go. Feeling a bit unwell, a few too many whiskies. But I’ll see you in Miami.”
“Okay, my friend.” Carson stands, embracing me in one of those bro hugs again. “I’ll be in touch.”
Just as I’m about to walk through the exit, I turn to look at Raine one last time. Her eyes meet mine, and they burn with fury.
Chapter 31
Soren
2:55 am and she’s still not back. What could be taking so long?
Hours have passed with me sitting at the kitchen island, eyes shifting from the apartment door, to the clock, to the weak halo of light above the stove. I shouldn’t have left. I should’ve stayed. It’s agony wondering what’s going on. What she might be doing.
