“Are you okay?”

“I think he’s cheating on me.”

I frowned. I wanted to say it served her right, but I got the distinct feeling that Seth had done her wrong too.

“When did you and Seth start dating?” I asked.

“Last September. Like last year, not last month.”

We didn’t get married until last November. How could I have been such a fool?

“What did he tell you about me?”

“That you had a baby together, but it was over.”

I closed my eyes and tried to calm myself down. This poor girl was as clueless as I had been. “Honey, I’m gonna be real honest with you. Ditch Seth. We got married two months after you started dating.”

Her mouth dropped open. “No. No way. Why would he do that?”

“Because he’s a selfish asshole. I’m sorry, hun, but he did it to me too. I didn’t know I was the other woman either. Don’t beat yourself up about it. It’s not your fault.”

Her eyes were shiny with tears. “I thought he was a good guy. I’m so sorry. You should hate me!”

I shook my head. “I’m sorry, Katie. And I don’t hate you. Wish he didn’t do you dirty, too.” I pulled out my card and handed it to her. “Gimme a call if you need to talk.”

She wiped her eyes and took my offered card. “Oh my God, I feel like such an asshole. I was all ready to give you a piece of my mind. I’m so sorry.”

“It’s not your fault. I’m sorry too. But I have to get going.”

I needed to get out of there. I felt so bad about what happened with her and Seth, but I wasn’t surprised. He was such a sneaky asshole. A part of me didn’t even want him to have a relationship with Rosie anymore. That was selfish of me, though; I’d never keep my daughter from her father. No matter how terrible of a person he was.

I handed Katie a tissue from my briefcase because I was a mom and I always had supplies of everything in my bag. I gave her a sad smile and booked it out of there.

When I got into my car, I made my decision. I was going to the hockey game.

I texted Logan back.

ME: Can’t wait to see my warrior in action!

I drove home, determined to finish up my freelance work and go to the hockey game with my sister and the kids.

“Wait, are you serious?” my sister cried over the story I told her about meeting Seth’s new girl.

Liam stood in front of her, his hands pressed to the glass as we waited for the players to come out on the ice for warmups. Veronica was holding Rosie and making her laugh.

“That’s why I didn’t hate you,” Veronica said. “As soon as I figured it out, I knew you had no clue. You wouldn’t have invited us to your wedding if you had known. But what a fu—” She stopped herself when she realized there were little ears around. “Jerk face.”

“What are you going to do?” Mari asked.

I shrugged and made sure Rosie’s headphones were on securely. I handed her a plushie of the Bulldogs mascot to keep her entertained. So far, she was doing good, but I wasn’t sure we’d stay for the whole game.

“Nothing. I gave her my card in case she wants to talk. I feel bad for her.”

“Forget him!” Veronica cheered. “You got the hockey hottie now.”

Mari nudged me. “Yeah!”

I wrinkled my nose. “We’re not serious.” But as soon as I said it, the players came out on the ice, and all I could pay attention to was the redheaded giant skating on the ice beside Blaise.
